Stocks Had Positive Bias While Major Averages Ended Mixed
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
On Wednesday's mixed session the volume totals were reported lighter than the prior trading session's volume totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly 2-1 on the NYSE and on 3-2 the Nasdaq exchange. There were 61 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from a total of 64 stocks on the prior session. The list of stocks hitting new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new lows on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. There were gains for 15 of the 20 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.
Most stocks advanced on Wednesday's mixed session. The S&P 500 Index added 1 point to 1,844. The NASDAQ gained 17 points to 4,243, its highest close since July 2000. The Dow lost 41 points to 16,373.
Earnings results were in focus and investors speculated whether the Fed will announce another cut to its bond purchases at next week's FOMC meeting. Overall, six of the 10 S&P 500 sectors rose.
Energy was among the best performing groups thanks to a +2% jump in the price of WTI crude. Anadarko Petroleum (APC +3.12%) Industrials also helped lift the market. Norfolk Southern (NSC +4.77%) after the company topped earnings expectations and boosted its dividend. Losses in materials weighed on Freeport-McMoRan (FCX -2.10%). International Business Machines Inc (IBM -3.28%) posted its steepest drop in quarterly revenue in more than four years.
Profit tallies garnered attention after the close with notable reports out from Netflix (NFLX), eBay (EBAY), Stryker (SYK) , Western Digital (WDC) and SanDisk (SNDK).
Treasury prices declined for a second day. The 10-year note fell 7/32 to yield 2.86%. The 30-year bond lost 4/32 to yield 3.76%.
The Market (M criteria) rally has encountered distribution. Leadership (stocks hitting new highs) recently has waned as the uptrend has come under pressure. Any new buying efforts should be selective, and investors should be watchful for any individual issues flashing technical sell signals. The CANSLIM.net Featured Stocks Page shows the most action-worthy candidates and their latest notes and a Headline Link directs members to the latest detailed analysis with data-packed graphs annotated by a Certified expert along with links to additional resources. The Premium Member Homepage includes "dynamic archives" to all prior pay reports published. Watch for an announcement via email concerning the next WEBCAST.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating above prior highs and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Financial and Tech Indexes Had Positive Bias
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.10%) led the tech sector higher while the Networking Index ($NWX +0.76%) posted a smaller gain and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.51%) edged lower. Financial shares had a slightly positive bias as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.27%) and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.44%) posted modest gains. The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.49%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.19%) both edged higher. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.24%) has a slightly negative bias. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.54%) was a standout decliner.

Hovering Near 52-Week High Following Technical Breakout
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Marlin Business Services (MRLN -$0.34 or -1.20% to $27.93) retreated from its 52-week high today. Recent volume-driven gains triggered a technical buy signal, but since then it has stalled. No resistance remains due to overhead supply, however, due to its lack of meaningful progress over the past 6 months its Relative Strength (RS) rating has recently slumped below the 80+ guideline for buy candidates under than fact-based investment system (see red circle).
It was last shown in this FSU section on 12/19/13 under the headline, "Finished Weak While Enduring Distributional Pressure", after a damaging loss on more than 3 times average volume. It returned to the Featured Stocks list when it was highlighted in yellow in the 12/19/13 mid-day report (read here) with new pivot point cited based on its 10/28/13 high plus 10 cents.
Fundamentals remain strong (C and A criteria) since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 12/02/13 its found support at its 200 DMA line. MRLN hails from the Commercial Services - Leasing group which now has a mediocre 88 Group Relative Strength Rating, a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. Return-On-Equity at 7% is below the 17% minimum guideline. With only 9.49 million shares (S criteria) in the publicly traded float it may be particularly volatile in the event of any institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 111 in Mar '12 to 144 in Dec '13, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.6 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.
