Major Averages End Slightly Lower

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 Index, and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index finished with small losses on Thursday, pulling back from their new recovery highs. Declining issues beat advancers by 5-4 on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq. Volume totals were near the prior session totals, yet slightly lower on the NYSE, and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There was a total of 80 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from 99 on the prior session. Breadth was slightly positive on the Featured Stocks Page as gains were posted by 16 out of the 27 high-ranked leaders now listed. The worst decliner among them was Silver Wheaton Corp (SLW -5.88%), a high-ranked Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems group leader which had traded up as much as +97.8% higher after first featured on 8/25/10.

The euro rallied against the dollar after the head of the European Central Bank warned of inflation risks. Concern about Europe's debt crisis eased further as Spain and Italy both sold debt for the first time this year. The market lost minor ground after a disappointing report on jobs. Initial jobless claims rose more than forecast to the highest level since October. The market also dealt with worries about rising food and energy costs. The December producer price index jumped +1.1%, led by higher prices for commodities.

Agriculture stocks extended their rally as corn prices climbed to a 30-month high. Deere & Co (DE +2.3%) also benefited from an analyst upgrade. Marathon Oil (MRO +6%) rallied as the market cheered its plan to split into two companies. Merck & Co Inc (MRK -6.6%) subtracted 19 points from the Dow after researchers halted late-stage trials of a blood thinner drug.

Gold & Silver Index Slumps After 50-Day Average Acted As Resistance

Financial shares were mixed on Thursday as the Bank Index ($BKX -0.72%) fell and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.45%) rose. Energy-related shares were also mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.37%) fell slightly and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.26%) posted a small gain. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.54%) again had a positive bias, and the Retail Index's ($RLX +0.21%) small gain also helped offset other weaknesses. The tech sector was especially quiet with very little change for the Networking Index ($NWX -0.13%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.04%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.02%), and Internet Index ($IIX +0.13%).

PICTURED: The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -3.43%) was a clear laggard group. It sank under prior lows after its 50-day moving average line acted as resistance following last week's violation.

Negative Reversal Marked Significant Top

Silver Wheaton Corp (SLW -$2.03 or -5.88% to $32.50) suffered another damaging loss today with above average volume and violated its recent low ($32.87 on 1/07/11). It finished the session -23.2% off its 52-week high. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line acted as resistance after a violation last week triggered a technical sell signal. Based on its deterioration it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. Only a subsequent rebound above its 50 DMA line would help its outlook improve.

Its last appearance in this FSU section was on 12/08/10 under the headline "Gap Down Followed Negative Reversal At All-Time High". The subsequent weakness makes this a very good example of why investors should watch out for negative reversals. A negative reversal occurs whenever a stock starts the session with gains but reverses and closes with a loss. When a negative reversal occurs with heavy volume at an all-time high after a stock is extended from any sound base it can be an especially worrisome sign of distributional pressure. Although an earlier negative reversal occurred on 11/09/10, SLW fought back and rallied to new highs yet again. But often negative reversals are followed by a longer and deeper consolidation. Many great winners have marked significant tops with a negative reversal.

Since first featured at $21.40 in the 8/25/10 mid-day report (read here) it traded as much as +97.8% higher. In its first FSU section appearance under the headline "Another High-Ranked Mining Firm Perched Near Highs" on 8/25/10, the annotated graph seen below was included. Late-August gains had it already in play as a potential buy candidate by the time the major averages' follow-through day occurred on 9/01/10 confirming a new rally.
