Records Continue as Major Averages Rally for Big Gains

Stocks rallied higher on Wednesday. The Dow was up 297 points to 19549. The S&P 500 added 29 points to 2241 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 60 points to 5393. Volume totals were higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 135 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 116 on the prior session. New 52-week highs expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

The Dow and S&P 500 climbed to record highs on Wednesday as investors positioned ahead of a monetary policy decision from the European Central Bank on Thursday. Overseas, international shares rallied amid optimism the ECB will extend its stimulus program past March. On the domestic front, a JOLTS update revealed job openings decreased to 5.5 million in October. In a separate release, MBA mortgage applications fell 0.7% last week.

Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory with Telecom stocks climbing 2% higher. Shares of Sprint (S +8.94%) rallied after SoftBank Corp (SFTBY +6.10%) founder Masayoshi Son pledged a $50 billion investment in the U.S. In the consumer space, Starbucks (SBUX +2.30%) after the company announced plans to open 12,000 additional stores globally. Dave & Buster’s (PLAY +18.75%) rallied as the arcade chain’s quarterly profit beat Street expectations. Health Care shares declined with Pfizer (PFE -1.17%) down after the drugmaker was fined $107 million by British officials due to a drug price increase of 2600%.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 12/32 to yield 2.34%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 2.3% to $49.77/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.6% to $1175.00/ounce.

Retail, Financial, Semiconductor and Networking Indexes Rose

The Retail Index ($RLX +1.80%), Bank Index ($BKX +1.53%), and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.99%) posted unanimous gains, further boosting the major averagesThe tech sector had a positive bias as the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +2.12%) and Networking Index ($NWX +1.49%) both rose, but the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -3.01%) encountered pressureThe Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.12%) rose but the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.06%) was unchanged.   The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.51%) eked out a small gain.
