Stocks spent most of the session in the red after the latest read on the jobs market fell short of estimates and the US dollar edged higher. Volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Wednesday's session which signaled that large institutions were not aggressively buying or selling stocks. Decliners led advancers by a modest 5-to-4 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, while new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 47 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower from the 58 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Overnight, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England kept interest rates steady, near record lows for the 17th consecutive month which matched expectations. Before Thursday's opening bell, the Labor Department said weekly jobless claims slid by -11,000 to 445,000. Elsewhere, same store chain sales rose which helped allay slowing economic woes. Investors are now waiting for Friday's non farm payrolls report for a better read on the fragile jobs market.

So far, the action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong and stocks are simply pausing to consolidate their recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) in recent weeks. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

The Retail Index ($RLX +0.38%) rose and across the board gains in the tech sector pushed the Networking Index ($NWX +0.09%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.26%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.43%), and Internet Index ($IIX +0.55%) collectively higher. Meanwhile, the Bank Index ($BKX -0.61%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.36%) suffered modest losses. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.65%) was a standout decliner as it backpedaled from multi-year highs. Mild weakness in the energy-related shares dragged the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.83%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.14%) into the red.

PICTURED: The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.88%) was one of Thursday's best gaining groups. New healthcare legislation has hardly thrown a wet blanket on healthcare stocks. Recently challenging its recovery highs, a surge above prior resistance for the HMO index would be a positive indication for healthcare issues' outlook. 

Baidu.com, Inc. (BIDU +$0.09 or +0.09% to $98.49) is consolidating well above prior highs that define technical support along with its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. While it could go on to produce more climactic gains, its negative reversal for a loss with heavy volume on 9/28/10 and the recent streak of losses with above average volume may be signs it is due for a longer and deeper consolidation. It consolidated for two and a half months following its negative reversal on 5/13/10 after a 10:1 split of its shares. 

BIDU has a stellar sales and earnings history that satisfies the C & A criteria, and the recently reported quarter ended June 30, 2010 showed sales revenues still accelerating impressively. The number of top-rated funds owning shares rose from 164 in Sep '09, and 211 in Jun '10, a positive trend with respect to institutional ownership (I criteria). 

Keep in mind that BIDU has traded up more than 10-fold, and it has not been a smooth ride since it first featured on Monday, October 30, 2006 in the CANSLIM.net Mid Day Breakouts Report (read here). After making great progress it went through a multi-month consolidation under its 50 and 20 DMA lines, then later returned as a noteworthy leader featured in CANSLIM.net reports. An annotated graph showed a vivid picture at the beginning of the stock's period of greatest weakness back on January 11, 2008 under the headline, "Weakness Hurting Chances For Featured Favorite" (read here). Take a look back at that now!  Remember that a dropped stock can be featured again in a future CANSLIM.net report if it repairs its technical damage and forms a new pivot point.
