Blue Chips Rise While Tech-Heavy Nasdaq Retreats

Stocks spent most of the session in the red after the latest read on the jobs market fell short of estimates. Volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Tuesday's session which signaled that large institutions were not aggressively buying or selling stocks. Decliners led advancers by a modest ratio on the NYSE and by about a 3-to-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange, while new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 58 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower from the 86 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Stocks fell on Wednesday after ADP, the country's largest private payrolls company, said employers cut jobs in September for the first time since the January. The report showed that employers slashed -39,000 jobs, after a revised +10,000 increase in August. The report fell short of the Street's estimate for a gain of 20,000. This was the first in a series of important reports on the fragile jobs market scheduled to be released later this week. Weekly jobless claims are slated to be released before Thursday's opening bell and the mother of all economic reports, the monthly non farm payrolls report, is set to be released before Friday's open.

So far, the action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong and stocks are simply pausing to consolidate their recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) in recent weeks. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a gain while the tech-sector was hit with heavy losses. The divergence suggests a flight to quality and rotation of money away from the tech-sector into other areas, including the classic "safe-haven" areas and defensive areas.

The tech sector was the primary source of weakness on Wednesday as the Internet Index ($IIX -2.25%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.59%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.33%), and Networking Index ($NWX -0.86%) ended unanimously lower. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.82%) also traded with a negative bias while financial shares were mixed and the Bank Index ($BKX -0.38%) edged lower while the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.71%) posted a gain. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.10%) inched lower while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.70%) posted a gain.

Damaging Technical Action and Faltering Fundamentals Raise Red Flags

Salesforce.com, Inc. (CRM -$8.96 or -7.87% to $104.95) violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with today's considerable loss on higher volume, raising concerns as distributional action did technical damage. In the past, as its earnings increases slumped below the +25% guideline we observed -"Those with open positions might choose to give it the benefit of the doubt until a more worrisome technical sell signal might raise greater concerns. Healthy stocks typically find support near their short-term 50-day average as institutional investors add to existing holdings, so any subsequent 50 DMA violation would raise greater concerns and might prompt more investors to lock in hard fought gains."

While it may repair the damage promptly and act better in the future, the fundamental and technical flaws for this high-ranked Computer Software - Enterprise firm are adding up to be more serious concerns. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. The increase in institutional (I criteria) ownership has been encouraging in the past, and the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 283 in Sep '09 to 339 in Jun '10. CRM traded up as much as +162.67% since featured in a Stock Bulletin on 8/16/09 under the headline "Forces Have Been Favorable For Software Services Firm."
