Breadth Negative While Major Indices' Correction Worsens

The major averages ended unanimously lower on Monday. The volume total was reported lighter on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session while the NYSE volume total was up from Friday's total. Breadth was solidly negative as decliners led advancers by more than 5-1 on the NYSE and more than 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs totals contracted and new highs were easily outnumbered by new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 9 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 18 stocks. The session concluded with gains for only 2 of the 38 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Stocks fell at the open as Greece failed to form a new government, but markets pared losses after a Greek party leader said he wants the country to stay in the euro and Europe must reexamine its austerity policy. Fears of a prolonged European debt crisis also grew as the cost of insuring against a Spanish default jumped to an all-time high.

All 10 sectors of the S&P gave up ground led by declines in the very influential financials. JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM -3.17%) as the largest U.S. bank by assets fell for a second day after announcing a $2 billion trading loss on Thursday due to a failed hedging strategy. Economically sensitive stocks were also lower, with energy-related shares among the laggards as commodities fell for a ninth day. Crude oil declined to its lowest level in almost five months and copper fell to a four-month low as investors worried that a slowdown in China may crimp demand.

After the close, Groupon (GRPN +18.54%) reported its first-quarter tally. Flight to safety bids pushed the 10-year note's yield to a seven-month low of 1.78% as it added on 15/32 to yield.

Distributional action from the major averages' (M criteria) argues this is technically yet another market "correction". Disciplined investors know that following proper rules for buying and selling increases their likelihood of getting the "above average" returns they are seeking. Be proactive about reducing market exposure and raising cash. Do not fight the tape in the days ahead.

Commodity-Linked Groups and Financials Led Decliners

Commodity-linked groups were among the worst laggards on Monday as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.66%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.23%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.79%) slumped. Influential financial shares also dragged the major indices lower as the Bank Index ($BKX -2.59%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -2.16%) each fell by more than -2%. The Retail Index ($RLX -1.60%) and tech shares also finished lower as the Networking Index ($NWX -1.39%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.09%), Internet Index ($IIX -0.74%), and Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.26%) ended with unanimous losses. The Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.30%) also finished with a small loss.

PICTURED: The Retail Index ($RLX -1.60%) fell to its first close below its 50-day moving average line since January. The weakness in the retail group adds emphasis to the deteriorating market (M criteria) conditions of late.

Slump Created Overhead Supply That May Now Act As Resistance

Priceline.com Inc. (PCLN -$12.21 or -1.81% to $663.18) slumped further below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and prior low ($678.04 on 4/24/12), failing to rebound after damaging losses. Only a prompt rebound above its 50 DMA line would help its outlook, but it now faces resistance due to overhead supply up through the $774 level. Based on weak action it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. Damaging losses amid widespread market weakness recently violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and raised concerns. Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock if it falls more than -7% from their purchase price. Also, the M criteria may override all other promising criteria, since 3 out of 4 stocks follow the direction of the major averages.

PCLN announced earnings +61% on +28% sales revenues for the latest quarter ended March 31, 2012 versus the year ago period. The company has maintained a stellar earnings history that satisfies the C and A criteria. Keep in mind, the investment system's biggest winning models were typically held by at least a few mutual funds and attracting many others. However, once a stock is very heavily owned by a long list of mutual funds, as is now the case with PCLN, investors should be especially cautious and alert for any technical sell signals or fundamental disappointments which could prompt a rush for the exits. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,451 in Jun '11 to 1,470 in Mar '12, and increasing interest is an encouraging sign concerning the I criteria.
