Breadth Positive But Leadership Waned as Indices Ended Mixed
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Tuesday. The Dow gained 72 points to 18,110. The S&P 500 advanced 5 points to 2,114. Tuesday's volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Leadership contracted as there were only 23 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 51 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have overcome recent distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has remained healthy, helping the rally continue. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The NASDAQ bucked the trend on Tuesday and closed 4 points lower to 5,055. It ended near the session high after a "negative reversal" on the prior session at all-time highs.
The major averages fluctuated as investors weighed profit tallies as the Federal Reserve meets. Nine of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were in positive territory. Health care was a relative outperformer. Merck (MRK +5.04%) rose on positive quarterly results and Mylan (MYL +1.38%) recovered. Telecom was up the most, as AT&T (T +2.26%) rose. However, The Container Store (TCS -14.20%) tumbled and Coach (COH -6.33%) sank after both missed analyst earnings projections. Whirlpool (WHR -7.14%) weighed on consumer discretionary stocks after missing quarterly expectations.
Economic data was light as consumer confidence in April fell, but home prices in February notched a slight gain.
Treasuries extended losses amid a $35 billion auction of five-year securities. The 10-year note lost 20/32 to yield 1.99%. The Fed will conclude its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday and Bloomberg places a 50% probability of the Fed Funds rate reaching 0.25% by their June meeting.
In commodities, WTI crude finished little changed at $56.99/barrel and COMEX gold rose +0.9% to $1,214.00/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar lost -0.6% with the euro up +0.8% to $1.0977/EUR and the yen 0.2% stronger to ¥118.86/USD.

Consolidating Following Latest Volume-Driven Breakout
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Epam Systems Inc (EPAM +$2.02 or +3.11% to $66.91) rallied with below average volume and finished the session back above its "max buy" level. Prior highs in the $63.50 area define near-term support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($62.53). Subsequent violations would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals.
EPAM is due to report first-quarter 2015 results after the market closes on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Keep in mind that volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Its last appearance in the FSU section was on 4/07/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Fresh Breakout Again Had Look of Institutional Demand". On 3/27/15 a new pivot point had been cited based on its 2/27/15 high plus 10 cents, as a new base of sufficient length had formed.
The high-ranked Computer - Tech Services firm reported Dec '14 earnings +29% on +28% sales revenues. Its 5 consecutive quarters with earnings above the +25% guideline makes it a solid match concerning the C criteria. Annual earnings growth (A criteria) has been strong. Its Relative Strength rating of 97 is now well above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Its Relative Strength line (the jagged blue line) has also been hitting new all-time highs.
It completed Secondary Offerings 8/30/13 and 9/17/13. Its Up/Down Volume ratio of 2.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 254 in Dec '13 to 339 Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 37.1 million shares (S criteria) in the pubic float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Y - Pulled back today with higher volume. Reported earnings +5% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Members were recently cautioned as it did not produce gains above the pivot point backed by at least the +40% above average volume necessary to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch.
