Major Averages Ended Mixed Again
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The major averages ended mixed and little-changed on Wednesday. The Dow gained 15 points to 18,224. The NASDAQ declined less than a point to 4,967. Volume totals for the session were reported mixed, lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. There were 92 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 97 stocks. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 5 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 fell 1 point to 2,113. The benchmark index is perched near all-time highs, up +3.8% year-to-date.
The major averages toggled between gains and losses as investors weighed the prospect of extending low rates past the summer against somewhat lackluster economic data and earnings. Fed Chair Yellen addressed the House in her second round of Congressional testimony, spurring speculation of rate hike delays. In economic data, a measure of new home sales fell less than expected in January.
Six of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were lower. Consumer discretionary was buoyed by retailer earnings announcements. Target (TGT +0.3%) and TJX (TJX +3.3%) rose after positive results from both. Meanwhile, Hewlett Packard (HPQ -9.9%) fell after failing to meet quarterly projections. Following an unfavorable court ruling, Apple (AAPL -2.6%) weighed on tech stocks as it slid. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines (LUV -2.7%) fell following reports indicating some planes failed safety inspections.
Treasuries experienced volatility today. After reversing course twice during the session, the 10-year note rose 5/32 to push yields down to 1.96%.
Commodities were mixed. On the heels of increased gasoline usage, WTI crude rallied +3% to $50.77. On the COMEX, gold climbed +0.3% to $1,201.00/oz. In FOREX, the dollar fell 0.2%, as the euro strengthened 0.2% to $1.1362/EUR and the yen gained 0.1% to ¥118.85/USD.

Wedged Above Prior Highs Getting Extended
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Jones Lang Lasalle Inc (JLL -$0.24 or -0.15% to $162.96) recently wedged higher with volume totals lacking great conviction and its color code was changed to green after rising above its "max buy" level. Prior highs in the $154 area and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line define support to watch on pullbacks. It was last shown in this FSU section on 2/04/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Pullback Following Big Volume-Driven Gain For New Highs". On the prior session it had finished strong with +251% above average volume behind its gain for a new 52-week high (N criteria) after gapping up. It was highlighted in yellow in the 2/03/15 mid-day report (read here) and noted - "Has the look of a valid Secondary Buy point up to +5% above prior highs."
JLL reported Dec '14 earnings +29% on +16% sales revenues, above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) for the 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison versus the year ago periods. That helped provide a reassurance, fundamentally, and it appeared to form a base-on-base type pattern after a breakout in mid-December which came after noted with caution in the 12/02/14 mid-day report, "Patient investors may watch for a new base or secondary buy point to possibly develop and be noted in the weeks ahead."
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 513 in Mar '14 to 658 in Dec '14, which is a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 43.9 million shares in the public float contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
