Breadth Positive as Major Averages Rallied Again
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Tuesday. The S&P 500 advanced 5 points to 2,115. The NASDAQ added 7 points to 4,968. Volume totals for the session were reported mixed, lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and 3-2 on the NYSE. There were 97 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 91 stocks. New 52-week highs expanded and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 8 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied to a new all-time high as it climbed 92 points to 18,209.
The major averages erased earlier losses as Fed Chair Janet Yellen hinted in her Congressional testimony that rate hikes may be coming after mid-year. On the economic front, a measure of home prices for December and sentiment in the services sector for February both exceeded estimates. Meanwhile, consumer confidence and manufacturing in the Richmond Fed’s region both failed to meet projections this month.
Nine of the 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were in positive territory. Utilities jumped as investors speculated delayed rate increases left time to take advantage of the relatively higher yield. Consumer discretionary stocks also rose, attributed to strong earnings releases. Home Depot (HD +4%) and Comcast (CMCSA +1.7%). In financials, JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +2.5%) after reporting revenue gains had a "strong start" to the year.
Treasury yields tumbled after Yellen's testimony. The 10-year note gained 23/32 to yield 1.98 and the long bond climbed 1.5 points to yield 2.59%. Amid a Treasury auction of 2-year notes, the security gained 3/32 to yield 0.55%.
Commodities were mostly lower with WTI erasing gains to lose 0.8% to $49.04/barrel. Gold lost 0.3% to $1196.90/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar lost 0.3% as the euro climbed 0.1% to $1.1342/EUR but the yen fell 0.1% to ¥118.90/USD.

Perched At High it Proposed a New Public Offering
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Actavis plc (ACT -$3.34 or -1.14% to $289.11) is perched at its 52-week high. Its color code was changed to green after rising above its "max buy" level. It recently proposed a new public offering while perched at its all-time high. It reported better than expected Dec '14 earnings and gave encouraging guidance, however the +23% earnings increase was below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. The recent low ($262.00 on 2/02/15) defines important near-term support below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line where violations would raise more serious concerns. Like any stock, it is important to watch how it acts near its 50-day moving average line. It found prompt support near its 50 DMA line earlier. More damaging losses could trigger a technical sell signal.
The Medical - Generic Drugs industry group currently has a 97 Group Relative Strength Rating. Leadership from other issues in the group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. The group had an 81 rating when it was shown in this FSU section on 12/29/14 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Formed New Base Above Prior Highs and 50-Day Moving Average". ACT was first highlighted in yellow in the 6/20/14 mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point based on its 2/26/14 high plus 10 cents. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has also been strong. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has been on the rise, up from 1,219 in Sep '13 to 1,939 in Dec '14, and its Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days, reassuring signs concerning the I criteria.
