Leadership Contracted as Major Averages Paused
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Wednesday. The Dow lost 17 points to 18029. The S&P 500 declined less than 1 point to 2,099. The NASDAQ advanced 7 points to 4,906. Volume totals for the session were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was slightly positive as advancers led decliners by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE and a slimmer margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were 62 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 94 stocks. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for only 4 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small Cap Index has been wedging into all-time high territory with recent gains lacking great volume conviction. Prior volume-driven gains while consolidating were signs of healthy institutional support, however, it has been a while since heavy volume accompanied gains into new high ground having the look of serious institutional accumulation.
The major averages toggled between gains and losses as investors weighed mixed economic data against FOMC meeting minutes. Housing starts and building permits for January both failed to meet estimates as cold weather crimped demand. Meanwhile, January's producer prices fell more than expected in sympathy with the price of oil. Similarly, industrial production and capacity utilization both disappointed analysts. Turning to the Fed, the first FOMC meeting minutes of 2015 demonstrated comfort with delaying a rate increase, as well as concern over international developments.
At the close, six of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were in positive territory. Utilities led the advance as a positive earnings report pushed NiSource (NI +3.17%) up. Consumer staples were another bright spot with PepsiCo (PEP +0.97%) higher. However, consumer discretionary fell as Garmin (GRMN -10.74%) sank after missing quarterly projections. Energy traded lower with the price of oil. Exxon Mobil (XOM -2.19%) fell after Warren Buffet liquidated his position in the company.
Treasuries advanced after the FOMC meeting release. The benchmark 10-year note climbed 16/32 to yield 2.08%.
In commodities, WTI crude tumbled -3.4% to $51.72/barrel while gold erased losses and finished 0.2% higher to $1,210.20/ounce.

Financial and Energy-Linked Groups Fell; Gold & Silver and Tech Indexes Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Bank Index ($BKX -1.40%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.65%) created a negative drag and weighed on the major averages on Wednesday. Weakness in energy-linked groups also limited the indices progress as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.83%) and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.81%) both fell. The tech sector saw gains for the Networking Index ($NWX +0.89%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.06%) but the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.28%) edged lower. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +2.23%) was a standout gainer.

Violation of 50-Day Moving Average Triggered Sell Signal
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ambarella Corporation (AMBA -0.97 or -1.84% to $51.68) edged lower today with light volume. It managed a" positive reversal" on the prior session following a damaging violation of its 50-day moving average (DMA) line on 2/13/15 which triggered a technical sell signal. A prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line would help its outlook improve, however that important short-term average may act as resistance.
The high-ranked Electronics - Semiconductor firm was last shown in this FSU section on 1/27/15 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Volume Totals Cooling While Staying Above 50-Day Moving Average". Members were reminded - "A damaging violation of that important short-term average would raise concerns and trigger a technical sell signal. Keep in mind that any stock that is sold can always be bought again if strength returns. Disciplined investors do not make excuses for any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price.""
It was highlighted in yellow in the 1/07/15 mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 12/04/14 high plus 10 cents. Fundamentals match with the fact-based investment system guidelines after it reported earnings +84% on +43% sales revenues for the Oct '14 quarter. Recent quarterly comparisons show improvement above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) with sales revenues showing encouraging acceleration. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rise from 51 in Dec '12 to 222 in Dec '14, a reassuring indication concerning the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 27.6 million shares in the public float can contribute to great price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Recent low ($262.00 on 2/02/15) defines important near-term support below its 50 DMA line where violations would raise more serious concerns.
