Breadth Negative as Indices Finished Slightly Higher
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks were modestly higher on Tuesday's session. The S&P 500 was up 3 points to close at a record level of 2,100. The NASDAQ Composite gained 5 points to 4,899. Volume totals for the session were reported mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lower on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 9-7 margin on the NYSE and about a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 94 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 102 stocks. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 8 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 28 points to 18,047. It is perched within close striking distance of its all-time high hit in December.
The major averages finished in positive territory as investors continued to monitor debt talks between Greece and its Eurozone creditors after negotiations stalled on Monday. A rebound in oil helped counter disappointing economic data. Denbury Resources (DNR +4.7%) rallied as WTI crude advanced +0.7% to $53.14/barrel after falling more than -3.5% during the session. Reports released this morning showed the pace of manufacturing activity slowed in the Fed’s New York region and homebuilder sentiment unexpectedly fell in February.
Health care and financials were the best performing sectors. Medtronic (MDT +3.7%) rose following its better-than-expected quarterly earnings. Charles Schwab (SCHW +2.1%) rose after reaching a settlement with regulators over sales practices. Waste Management (WM +5.2%) was a notable gainer after quarterly results topped expectations. Telecom and utilities were down the most on the session. Shares of Verizon (VZ -0.3%) and Exelon (EXC -1.3%) fell. Cablevision (CVC - 4.1%) was the biggest loser in the S&P 500, shedding following an analyst downgrade of the shares.
Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note losing 25/32 to yield 2.14%. In commodity trading, COMEX gold retreated 1.6% to $1206.90/ounce.

Perched at All-Time High, Extended From Prior base
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Nxp Semiconductors N V (NXPI -$1.07 or -1.26% to $83.72) is hovering near its new all-time high (N criteria) with volume totals cooling after rallying above its "max buy" level. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above their prior high or pivot point and always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. When NXPI was last shown in this FSU section on 1/22/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "50-Day Moving Average Acted as Support After 'Negative Reversal'", its finish in the upper third of its intra-day range was noted as a reassuring sign that it was finding support.
It was highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 11/28/14 high plus 10 cents in the 1/05/15 mid-day report (read here). Subsequent gains above the pivot point on 1/09/15 were backed by +66% above average volume. That offered investors fresh proof of institutional buying demand driving the stock to new highs (N criteria) that triggered a new technical buy signal.
Fundamentals remain strong through the Dec '14 quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history is a good match the investment system guidelines.
Its slightly bullish 1.2 Up/Down Volume Ratio is above 1.0, an unbiased indication of institutional accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 683 in Mar '14 to 929 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The Elec - Semicondctor Fablss group has a high 93 Group Relative Strength Rating and leadership from others in the industry group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. It completed a Secondary Offering on 5/14/14 and earlier Secondary Offerings on 2/04/13, 3/08/13, 9/13/13, and 12/10/13.
