Major Averages Quietly Inching To New Highs For Year

The major averages ended higher on Wednesday's session while volume totals remained very light. Advancing issues beat decliners by nearly 2-1 on the NYSE and by 7-6 on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. A total of 49 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from 36 on the prior session. Of the 25 high-ranked leaders currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page, Rovi Corp (ROVI +2.73%) was among the best gainers as it hit a new 52-week high with +48% above average volume behind its solid gain.

It was another quiet, but positive finish on Wall Street as the major stock averages inched to new highs for the year. The S&P 500 Index remains on track for its best December since 1991. It was the highest close for the Dow since August of 2008. Treasuries extended gains after the final of this week's government auctions saw stronger-than-expected demand. Meanwhile, the US dollar slid for a eighth day versus the yen, the longest slump since October 2004.

Energy and mining companies were among the best performers. Noble Energy Inc (NBL +2.6%) rose after announcing a "significant" natural gas discovery. Rare-earth miner Molycorp Inc (MCP +6.7%) spiked higher after China cut its export quotas for the minerals. Meanwhile, BJ's Wholesale Club Inc (BJS +7%) jumped on a report that a private equity firm was preparing to make a hostile bid for the company. Financial stocks including Morgan Stanley (MS -1.37%) were under pressure and lagged on pessimistic analyst comments. Goldman Sachs (GS -0.92%) also fell after an analyst cut earnings estimates on both companies.

Internet-Related Shares Among Big Winners This Year

The Retail Index ($RLX +0.31%) posted a modest gain and defensive groups including the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.33%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.35%) also rose on Wednesday. Energy-related shares rose and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.91%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.89%) were among the standout gainers. Meanwhile, financial shares created a slight drag on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.67%) and the Bank Index ($BKX -0.27%) edged lower. Tech-related shares were mixed as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.58%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.28%) suffered small losses and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.13%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.15%) inched higher.

Watch Extended Stocks For Secondary Buy Points

Ezcorp Inc's (EZPW +$0.08 or +0.29% to $27.56) volume totals have been cooling while holding its ground stubbornly near its 52-week high. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line (now $25.07) defines important near-term chart support. It has recently been noted as - "Stubbornly holding its ground after recent volume-driven gains, extended from a sound base pattern." Disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks that have rallied from sound base patterns more than +5% above their prior chart highs. Patience may allow for secondary buy points to develop which may be noted in the future.

It consolidated above prior highs then continued higher since its last appearance in this FSU section on 11/05/10 with an annotated graphs under the headline "Breakout Backed By Four Times Average Volume". It gapped up then for a new 52-week high, rising from a 6-month cup shaped base without a proper handle. Earnings have remained above the +25% guideline in its quarterly comparisons versus the year ago period, satisfying the C criteria. It also has a strong annual earnings history (A criteria). The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 327 in Dec '09 to 387 in Sep '10, a reassuring sign with respect to the I criteria. EZPW was featured in yellow in the 11/05/10 mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 52-week high plus ten cents. It had found support near its 200-day moving average (DMA) line and rebounded impressively since it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 5/07/10.
