Major Averages Continue Quiet Upward Drift

The major stock averages added to their year-end advance in quiet trading. Volume totals cooled from the prior session's totals, again suggesting that there was no increase in buying demand coming from the institutional crowd. Advancing issues beat decliners by 3-2 on the NYSE and by 7-6 on the Nasdaq. Of the 28 high-ranked leaders currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page only 6 issues posted gains, clearly contrasting with the bullish bias in the market overall. A total of 84 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the total of 100 issues on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

The holiday mood is still casting a positive glow on Wall Street, although the tone is muted. The price of oil closed above $90 a barrel for the first time in two years after the Energy Department reported a greater-than-expected decline in U.S. stockpiles of crude. Economic reports and corporate results painted a mixed picture. The government said gross domestic product grew 2.6% in the third quarter. While that is up from the government's prior estimate, analysts had been looking for more. November existing home sales gained +5.6%, also less than forecast.

Financial shares were some of the session's best performing issues, and JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +2.8%) added 8 points to the Dow. Walgreen Co (WAG +5.5%) jumped after earnings beat expectations. Nike Inc. (NKE -5.7%) fell on disappointing orders.

Strength In Financial Indexes Helps Underpin Rally

Financial shares post more gain on Wednesday as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.78%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.91%) underpinned the major averages' rally again. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.79%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.00%) posted decent gains. With oil's rise above the $90 per barrel threshold energy-related shares only had a slightly positive bias as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.06%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.36%) seeped higher. Meanwhile, the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.75%) was a standout laggard. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.07%) held its ground, and the tech sector showed a slightly negative bias as the Networking Index ($NWX -0.38%), Internet Index ($IIX -0.23%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.03%) failed to contribute to the major averages' rally effort.

Consolidating Following +43% Rally Since September Breakout

Ulta Salon Cosmetics & Fragrance, Inc. (ULTA +$1.08 or +3.23% to $34.49) posted a solid gain today with above average volume, rallying up from its 50-day moving average (DMA) line - which is a classic support level chart readers always watch closely. Subsequent deterioration below it or the most recent chart low ($32.01 on 12/15/10) would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals. Losses in recent weeks marked by heavier volume hurt its Accumulation/Distribution rating which has slumped from a B+ to a D- (see red circle) since its last appearance in this FSU section on 11/01/10 with detailed analysis and an annotated graph under the headline "Recent Lows and 50-Day Average Define Support to Watch". The number of top-rated funds with an ownership interest has grown from 278 funds in Dec '09 to 377 funds as of Sep '10 which is an encouraging sign of increasing institutional interest (the I criteria).
