Major Averages End Quieter Session Mixed

The major averages ended mixed and little changed on Thursday. Volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session's totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Rising issues beat decliners by 6-5 on the NYSE and by 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. A total of 80 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from a total of 42 issues on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Of the 28 high-ranked leaders currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page the biggest gainer was Lululemon Athletica (LULU +14.11%).

The Dow closed with a tiny loss in quiet trading, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq advanced. Economic data gave the market a lift. First time claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to the second-lowest level this year. Wholesale sales in October climbed the most in seven months. Treasuries rebounded after an almost six-month high for 10-year yields attracted investors. The 10-year Treasury note was up 15/32 to yield 3.22%.

Financial stocks stood out. Janus Capital Group Inc (JNS +4.5%) rallied following an analyst upgrade of the asset manager sector because of improving equity markets. Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold (FCX +1.9%) rose after it announced a special $1.00 per share dividend and a stock split. EI DuPont de Nemours & Co (DD -1.1%), another Dow component, projected earnings that could miss analyst forecasts.

PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small Cap Index is at new recovery highs, and its rising Relative Strength line indicates that small-cap stocks have been recently outperforming the benchmark S&P 500 Index. Leadership in small-caps is good news, and a reassuring sign for investors who focus on small-cap growth stocks. Companies matching the winning models under the fact-based investment system typically had 30 million shares outstanding or less.

Bank Index's Technical Improvement Bodes Well For Market Outlook

Gains for the Bank Index ($BKX +2.23%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.70%) provided a very important positive influence on the major averages on Thursday. The Networking Index ($NWX +1.70%) was also a standout gainer, meanwhile the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.23%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.28%) posted small gains. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.27%), Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.22%), and Retail Index ($RLX -0.06%) edged lower. Commodity-linked groups had a slightly positive bias as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.80%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.54%) posted modest gains while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.08%) ended flat.

PICTURED: The Bank Index ($BKX +2.23%) was a standout gainer on Thursday. Gains this week have helped it rise above prior chart highs and its 200-day moving average (DMA) line. Longtime readers of this commentary should recognize that, since financial stocks are a very important leading indicator, the technical improvement bodes especially well for the market's current rally.

Distributional Pressure After Recent Public Offering

Vanceinfo Tech Inc Ads (VIT -$0.98 or -2.71% to $35.14) finished down again today, raising concerns while violating support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with above average volume behind a 5th consecutive loss. It had wedged to new highs without great volume conviction after completing a Public Offering on 11/23/10, and then on 12/03/10 there was a "negative reversal" after hitting an all-time high. It has not formed a sound base, and recent action has been indicative of heavy distribution. A prompt rebound above that important short-term average line would be a reassuring sign, meanwhile any subsequent deterioration leading to a violation of its last chart low ($32.37 on 11/17/10) would raise more serious concerns and trigger a more worrisome technical sell signal.

Since its last appearance in this FSU section with an annotated graph on 10/21/10 under the headline "Volume Totals Cooling While Perched At Historic High" it has made a choppy ascent marked by two pullbacks near its 50 DMA line. VIT has traded up as much as +104% from $20.07 when first featured in yellow nearly one year ago in the 12/24/09 mid-day report (read here).
