Leadership Expanded as Major Averages Rose

The major averages were mixed for the week as the Dow gained +0.7% and the S&P 500 advanced +0.4% to record levels for the seventh-straight week of gains. Friday's advance limited the NASDAQ to a -0.2% weekly decline, its first weekly loss since mid-October. There volume totals were reported mixed, lighter on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and a narrower 8-7 margin on the NYSE. There were 87 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 74 stocks. The new 52-week highs totals expanded outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 10 gainers among the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page. A "confirmed uptrend" for the market (M criteria) has been repeatedly noted in this daily Market Commentary since large gains were noted on 10/21/14 backed by higher volume totals as leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) expanded.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 was up 3 points to 2,075. The benchmark index is perched at a record high after tallying 7 consecutive  weekly gains.

Stocks finished off of earlier highs as the Dow climbed 58 points to 17,958.  The NASDAQ closed 11 points higher to 4,780.

Stock indexes rallied earlier, but finished off of intra-day highs as investors digested economic data. The non-farm payrolls report showed 321,000 jobs were added last month, marking the 10th month of over 200,000 additions. Meanwhile, unemployment held at 5.8%, a six-year low. Separately, the trade deficit narrowed to $43.4 billion and factory orders unexpectedly fell -0.7%.

At the close five of 10 S&P 500 sectors were higher. Financials led the advance, on speculation of increased profit from widening credit spreads. Bank of America (BAC +2.73%) and JP Morgan Chase (JPM +2.15%) rose. Utilities and Energy were off the most. Duke Energy (DUK -1.97%) fell on pollution concerns and ConocoPhillips (COP -2.11%) in sympathy with falling oil prices.

Treasuries were lower after the jobs report. 10-year notes lost 20/32 to yield 2.30%. In commodities energy was mixed as WTI crude lost 1.7% to $65.68/barrel, but natural gas rallied +4.2%. On the COMEX, gold declined -1.4% to $1,190.10/ounce.

Financial and Tech Groups Rose; Commodity-Linked Groups Fell Again

Strength from financial stocks underpinned Friday's rally for the major averages as the  both posted solid gains. The tech sector also had a positive bias as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.72%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.83%), and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.00%) finished unanimously higher. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.10%) finished flat, meanwhile commodity-linked groups backpedaled as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.83%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.06%), and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.45%) each lost ground.

Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com

PICTURED: The Bank Index ($BKX +1.91%) rallied to new 2014 highs. Strength from the financial groups is a reassuring "leading indicator" for the broader market outlook. Longtime readers recall that the major averages have been prone to the worst downdrafts when financial stocks were weak.  They were weak in October, heightening concerns at that time, while the market sputtered. However, strength has since returned.

PICTURED: The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.56%) also rallied to a new high.

Technical Breakout Indicative of Institutional Demand

United Insurance Holding (UIHC +$1.00 or +5.15% to $20.59) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 11/05/14 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It hit a new 52-week high with today's 4th consecutive gain, rising from an orderly flat base-on-base pattern with volume +48% above average. Volume should be at least +40% above average behind gains above a stock's pivot point to trigger a proper technical buy signal. Heavy volume is always considered a more serious sign of institutional buying demand.

It reported earnings +58% on +33% sales revenues for the Sep '14 quarter, its 5th consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings (A criteria) have been strong.

It completed a new Public Offering on 2/27/14.The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 30 in Dec '13 to 165 in Sep '14, and its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.1 is also a reassuring sign is shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.
