Major Averages Extended Losses Into the Close
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The major averages extended their losses into the closing bell on Thursday. The volume totals were reported lighter on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers again by almost a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by a narrower 7-6 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 22 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up one notch from a total of 21 stocks on the prior session. Any sustained rally must have leadership, so recently waning new highs totals are a concern coupled with the noted signs of distribution. The list of stocks hitting new 52-week highs still outnumbered new lows on the Nasdaq exchange, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the NYSE. There were gains for only 7 of the 19 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 68 points to 15,821, the S&P 500 gave up 7 points to 1,785 and the NASDAQ shed 4 points with the index closing at 4,033. Stocks were under pressure throughout the session. Significantly better-than-expected reports on third-quarter GDP and weekly jobless claims heightened fears over the timeline for Fed tapering.
Most sectors on the S&P ended lower. Financials showed weakness with Bank of America Corp (BAC -1.28%) down slightly. On the earnings front, Aeropostale Inc (ARO -2.88%) fell after the company posted a wider-than-projected loss in the quarter. Also among retailers, Guess? Inc (GES -2.10%) fell following their disappointing profit tally. In other news, Apple Inc (AAPL +0.5%) edged higher on reports that the company was close to a deal with China Mobile.
Turning to fixed income markets, Treasuries were lower along the curve. The benchmark 10-year note was down 9/32 to yield 2.87% and the 30-year bond was off 3/16 of a point to yield 3.91%.
The Market (M criteria) remains in a confirmed rally, however showing signs of distribution and waning leadership, yet the Dow and S&P 500 Index both remain perched near new all-time highs. As always, any new buying efforts should be selective. The CANSLIM.net Featured Stocks Page shows the most action-worthy candidates and their latest notes and a new Headline Link directs members to the latest detailed analysis with data-packed graphs annotated by a Certified expert along with links to additional resources. The Premium Member Homepage - includes "dynamic archives" to all prior pay reports published. Watch for an announcement via email concerning the next WEBCAST.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index has suffered 5 consecutive losses while pulling back from all-time highs.

Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Financial shares were mixed as the Bank Index ($BKX +0.37%) posted a modest gain while the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.59%) fell. The Networking Index ($NWX +0.85%) led the tech sector while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.23%) posted a smaller gain and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.06%) finished flat. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.17%) ended with a small loss. Energy-related shares had a slightly negative bias as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.58%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.37%) edged lower. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.46%) lagged with a large loss.

Possible Head-and-Shoulders Top After Distributional Action
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Proto Labs Inc (PRLB -$2.53 or -3.39% to $72.14) has been failing to attract buying demand after slumping well below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line which is now downward sloping and may act as resistance. In recent months it did not form any sound base pattern. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. The annotated daily graph shows a possible "head-and-shoulders" topping pattern forming. Any subsequent violation of support at the prior lows defining the neckline would trigger a worrisome technical sell signal.
Its Accumulation/Distribution rating has slumped from C- to the worst possible E rating since the high-ranked Electronic - Parts firm was last shown in this FSU section on 11/04/13 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Undercut 50-Day Moving Average Yet Found Prompt Support". Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 0.8 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under distributional pressure over the past 50 days. PRLB traded up as much as +80% since first featured at $49.97 highlighted in the 4/10/13 mid-day report (read here). The weak action of late has been a sign of profit taking and its outlook only gets worse the longer it lingers below its 50 DMA line, while a rebound above that short-term average is necessary for its outlook to improve.
It reported earnings +28% on +29% sales revenues for the Sep '13 quarter, above the +25% minimum earnings guideline. That continued its strong growth trend satisfying the C criteria and helped it maintain a very high 97 Earnings Per Share rank. Its small supply of only 19.1 million shares (S criteria) in the publicly traded float is ideal, yet it can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 131 in Jun '12 to 241 in Sep '13, a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria.
