S&P 500 Index Hits New 2010 Highs With Fifth Consecutive Weekly Gain

For the week, the Nasdaq Composite Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average both gained +2.9%, and the S&P 500 was up +3.6% for its fifth straight weekly advance. Friday's volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange while advancers led decliners by about a 3-to-2 ratio on both major exchanges. There were 124 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, marking a great expansion from the total of 188 issues on the prior session. New 52-week highs are easily outnumbering new 52-week lows on both exchanges, and the NYSE new lows total was in the single digits for a third day in a row.

Among the 35 high-ranked stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page, the biggest gainers included Retail/Apparel firms Lululemon Athletica (LULU +6.87%) and Deckers Outdoor Corp (DECK +6.34%). Financial stocks were among the top performers on hopes banks may increase dividends soon. Gold futures touched a record $1,398 per ounce while the US dollar suffered its second straight weekly decline against a basket of foreign currencies.

The best jobs report in five months failed to spark any decisive market action after the Labor Department reported private payrolls rose 159,000 in October. Analysts were looking for a gain of around 80,000. The unemployment rate remained at 9.6% as the labor force declined. A separate report showed pending home sales dropped unexpectedly in September, the latest sign that the housing market will take a long time to mend.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index saw a surge in volume to above average levels this week as it gapped up and hit new 2010 highs.

Bank Index's Technical Shape Improved With Three Consecutive Gains

Financial shares helped underpin the major averages' gains again on Friday as the Bank Index ($BKX +2.16%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.05%) finished higher. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.90%) was a positive influence, and modest gains from the tech sector included the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.58%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.79%), and Internet Index ($IIX +0.34%) while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.42%) lagged. Defensive groups ended modestly higher as the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.50%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.37%) rose, and energy shares were quiet while the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.04%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.23%) inched higher.
