Indices Rally With Above Average Volume And More Positive Breadth

The small-cap indexes and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index outpaced the blue chips on Wednesday as the major averages rallied toward their April 2010 highs. Volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Tuesday's session totals. The healthy action signaled that large institutions had an even greater appetite for buying stocks as advancers led decliners by almost a 3-to-1 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, breadth improving from the near 3-to-2 margin gainers had over decliners the day before. New 52-week highs swelled and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 111 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, more that doubling the 45 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Despite a late-afternoon fade, the strong rally helped the major stock averages climb to new five-month highs. Upbeat earnings and sharp gains in metal and oil prices provided the backdrop for Mining and industrial stocks advanced amid speculation that Chinese demand for basic materials will improve after the country announced record currency reserves. Copper lifted to a 27-month high and gold hit another record.

Intel Corp (INTC -2.7%), JP MorganChase (JPM -1.4%) and railroad company CSX Corp (CSX +4.2%) all delivered positive earnings surprises. Visa Inc (V +3.6%) and MasterCard Inc. (MA +3.9%) rallied after JP Morgan reported an increase in credit-card use.

Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check headlines and watch for notes concerning Featured Stocks and when they will be reporting results for the latest quarter. While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few have broken down.

The nearest level of support for the major averages is their respective summer highs. Meanwhile, the indices face near-term resistance at their respective April highs which are in very close striking range. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained as many as 134 points before finishing up 75 points at 11,096, only -1.4% off 2010's peak, while and the Nasdaq Composite Index is -3.7% off its high, respectively. Their ability to eventually eclipse the year's earlier highs could easily coincide with much greater upward momentum in the market. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index tallied a fourth straight increase and the benchmark index has gained more than +12% since the first of September 1st follow-through day (FTD). Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line appears to be on the cusp of converging and crossing back above its 200 DMA line, which would be another encouraging technical sign.

Gold and Silver Index Matched 2008 High With Strong Close Today

Financial shares were mixed on Wednesday as the Bank Index ($BKX -1.00%) fell and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.36%) posted a small gain. There was a small loss for the Retail Index ($RLX -0.47%) and little change for the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.06%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.10%), meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX +0.82%) and Internet Index ($IIX +1.07%) led the tech sector higher. The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.85%) rose and Oil Services Index ($OSX +2.19%) again spurted higher, and defensive groups including the Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.12%) rose.

Leader Hits Another All-Time High

Neogen Corp. (NEOG +$1.00 or +2.91% to $35.31) posted a considerable gain today with near average volume, hitting another new all-time high. An upward trendline connecting its August - October lows defines an initial support level to watch. Below that, its 50-day moving average line and prior highs in the $30 area coincide and define chart support. Since its last appearance in this FSU section on 8/20/10 under the headline "Healthy Consolidation May Offer Secondary Buy Point" it has gotten extended from its prior highs.

NEOG has a history of steady annual earnings growth (A criteria). The 3 most recent quarterly comparisons have shown accelerating sales revenues growth with earnings per share increases above the investment system's +25% guideline. If shares purchased at higher levels ever turn into losses, remember to always limit losses per the 7-8% sell rule, and never hold a stock if it falls more than that much from your purchase price.
