Indices Hold Ground Quietly Ahead Of Earnings Season

The major averages inched higher on Monday, yet the small cap indexes ended slightly in the red. Volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Friday's session, which signaled that large institutions had no great appetite for buying stocks, but they were not sellling aggressively either. Advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on the NYSE while the opposite held true for the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 76 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the 35 issues that appeared on the prior session.

There were no economic reports, and government bond markets were closed to observe Columbus Day. Trading was thin as Wall Street waited for key earnings reports due later this week. Merger news attracted some attention as The Gymboree Corp (GYMB +22.44%) said it would be bought by Bain Capital for $1.8 billion. Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK +1.08%) rose as it sold south Texas shale assets to CNOOC Ltd (CEO +1.69%), China's third largest oil company, for $1.1 billion.

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong. Many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains. Technically, very few have broken down badly. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) in recent weeks. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average stayed above the psychologically important 11,000 level. It finished only -2.2% off its April 2010 recovery high.

Healthcare Index Rises Very Near 2010 Peak

The tech sector was mixed as the Networking Index ($NWX +0.20%) and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.72%) posted gains while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.84%) and Internet Index ($IIX -0.23%) drifted lower. Commodity-linked areas were little changed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.10%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.03%), and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.06%) finished virtually flat. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.48%) suffered a modest loss while the Bank Index ($BKX -0.06%) and Retail Index ($RLX -0.02%) also ended flat.

PICTURED: The Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.48%) was a standout gainer on Monday as the index's intra-day high was tallied within 3 cents of its 2010 high.

Brazilian Beverage Firm Too Extended Now For Disciplined Investors

Comp De Bebidas Adr (ABV +$0.71 or +0.54% to $133.37) hit yet another new all-time high today with 7th consecutive gain. It is very extended from a sound base, and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($113.76 now) defines support. The Brazil-based beverage firm has traded up as much as +27.33% since it was first featured in the 6/29/10 mid-day report (read here). It found impressive support near its 200 DMA line in prior months.

It has a great annual earnings (A criteria) history. however, fundamental concerns were raised after its results for the quarter ended June 30, 2010 showed only a +19% earnings increase on +16% sales revenues, below the +25% guideline. Ideal buy candidates under the fact-based system historically showed stronger increases in the latest quarter reported. With concerns over ABV's fundamentals and its current technical shape, disciplined investors may look at other high-ranked leaders on the Featured Stocks page as more ideal buy candidates.
