New Highs List Contracts As Volume Totals Cool

Stocks ended lower on Monday as the US dollar rallied and the latest round of economic data was released. Volume totals were reported lower on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Friday's session which signaled that large institutions were not aggressively selling stocks. Decliners trumped advancers by nearly a 3-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, while new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 19 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down abruptly from the 84 issues that appeared on the prior session.

US capital goods orders and pending home sales rose in August while earnings forecasts were lowered on many large cap companies. Pending home sales rose for a second straight month which suggests the housing market may be stabilizing after a lousy second quarter. Many leading stocks got smacked on Monday as they pulled back toward important areas of support. The benchmark S&P 500 continued trading between its recent trading range of 1,130-1,150. One should expect this sideways action to continue until either of these important levels are breached on a closing basis.

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong and stocks are simply pausing to consolidate their recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) in recent weeks. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has recently rallied above its summer highs and the blue chip index it is trading only -4.5% off its April high.

Weakness Weighs On Defensive Groups And Most Others

Widespread losses weighed on most groups Monday, and defensive areas sustained some of the larger losses as the Healthcare Index ($HMO -2.32%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.74%) fell. Weakness in energy-related areas dragged the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.94%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.34%) down. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.41%) also slumped, while the Bank Index ($BKX -0.56%) and Retail Index ($RLX -0.27%) were also a small influence dragging on the major averages. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.42%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.92%), Networking Index ($NWX -0.91%), and Internet Index ($IIX -0.83%) ended with unanimous losses.

Medical Firm Consolidating Near Multi-Month Upward Trendline

Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp's (MRX -$0.25 or -0.85% to $29.27) suffered a small loss on light volume today, still hovering in a tight range near its 52-week high with volume totals cooling. An upward trendline helps define the initial chart support level to watch above prior highs in the $28 area. Its fairly fresh breakout was shown under the 8/12/10 headline "Weak Finish Amounted To A Damaging Distribution Day" as it endured some selling pressure. It was noted in prior reports for its strong quarterly and annual earnings history. After its 8/06/10 breakout from a sound base, the high-ranked Medical - Ethical Drugs firm has risen with the help of a bullish market (M criteria) environment. Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling if any stock falls more than -7% from their purchase price.
