Advancers Outnumbering Decliners As Indices Rise

Stocks gave back a fair part of earlier gains but ended higher after latest round of economic data helped allay fears of a double dip recession. Thursday's volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 3-to-2 ratio on the NYSE and by a 7-to-6 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 55 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, higher than the 54 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Before Thursday's open, the Labor Department said weekly jobless claims fell -27,000 to 451,000 last week which bodes well for the ailing jobs market. Elsewhere, the trade deficit narrowed more than forecast which bodes well for the global recovery. High ranked stocks fared well which is another sign that this nascent rally is strengthening. It is also encouraging to see very little distribution emerge since the major averages confirmed their latest rally attempt on the Wednesday, September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD).

Looking forward, the window is now open for disciplined investors to begin carefully buying high-ranked stocks again. It was encouraging to see a flurry of high-ranked leaders trigger fresh technical buy signals and break out of sound bases in recent sessions. The next important level to watch for the major averages are their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines. It is important to note that approximately 75% of FTDs lead to new sustained rallies, while 25% fail. In addition, every major rally in market history has begun with a FTD, but not every FTD leads to a new rally. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has recently encountered resistance near its 200 DMA line. Volume totals have been below average and cooling since the Labor Day holiday.

Financial Indexes Contribute To Positive Bias

The financial indexes contributed to the major averages' positive bias on Thursday as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.15%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.59%) posted gains. The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.10%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.48%) posted small gains and the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.99%) also rose, meanwhile the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.78%) was a standout decliner on the session. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.04%) was flat and the tech indexes were mostly quiet as the Networking Index ($NWX -0.32%) fell and the Internet Index ($IIX -0.01%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.06%), and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.10%) essentially held their ground.

Finished Below Pivot Point Near Middle Of Intra-day Range

Under Armour, Inc. (UA +$0.64 or +1.64% to $39.60) topped its 7/27/10 high earlier today and finished at a new high close for the year with its 7th consecutive gain since finding recent support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. A gain with substantial volume could confirm a technical buy signal, but today gain lacked the volume and it did not close above its pivot point cited. Recent quarters show improving sales revenues growth and big earnings increases following weaker comparisons. The downward turn in annual earnings (A criteria) in FY '08 remains a noted fundamental concern (see red circle) with respect to the fact-based investment system. It was noted in the mid-day report on 9/07/10 and on 7/27/10 that UA was long ago dropped from the CANSLIM.net Featured Stocks list on 5/04/07 and it subsequently fell from $44.50 to as low as $11.94 before rebounding impressively.
