Major Averages Continue Rallying Into Record High Ground

Stocks closed out the first week of June trading on a positive note. Overall, the Dow increased +1.2% this week and the S&P 500 rose +1.3%, their third straight week of gains. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up for the fifth time in six weeks as it finished with a weekly advance of +1.9%. The volume was reported higher than the prior session total on the NYSE but lower on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by nearly a 3-1 margin on Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Leadership expanded as there were 106 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the total of 85 stocks on the prior session. New 52-week highs swelled easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for all 10 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page. The S&P 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average continued their surges into new high territory. The expansion in leadership (new 52-week highs) is a reassuring signal that the market direction (M criteria) is in a "confirmed uptrend".  Any new buying efforts should be selective and focused in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 88 points to another record high of 16,924.

The S&P 500 also closed at a new all-time high as it gained nearly 9 points to 1,949. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 25 points to 4,321. The major averages advanced on Friday thanks to data showing U.S. employment returned to its pre-recession level. Employers added 217,000 jobs in May, which was above expectations and marked the fourth straight month that payrolls rose by at least 200,000. In addition, the unemployment rate held steady at almost a six-year low of 6.3%.

Seven of the 10 S&P 500 sectors finished higher. Industrials and energy paced the advance with gains from General Electric (GE +1.53%) and Schlumberger (SLB +2.0%). Utilities and telecom lagged behind as investors shied away from defensive issues and SCANA (SCG -0.84%) and AT&T (T -0.23%) fell.
Treasuries edged lower. The 10-year note fell 3/32 to yield 2.60%. The 30-year bond declined 2/32 to yield 3.44%.

Halted Slide at 50-Day Moving Average After Distributional Pressure

Amtrust Financial Svcs (AFSI +$0.34 or +0.81% to $42.35) recently found support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line following damaging losses on higher volume. Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. The high-ranked Insurance - Property/Casualty/Title firm stalled and encountered distributional pressure soon after rising from an advanced "3-weeks tight" base. It was highlighted in yellow in the 5/21/14 mid-day report (read here) and it last appeared with annotated graphs in the FSU report under the headline, "Finished Strong With Gain From Advanced Base Pattern". The pivot point cited was based on its 5/13/14 high plus 10 cents.

The major averages (M criteria) have produced confirming gains coupled with an expansion in leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs), a welcome reassurance that the market has established a meaningful rally. It reported earnings +68% on +89% sales revenues for the quarter ended Mar '14 quarter versus the year ago period, its 7th consecutive comparison above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). It has a great annual earnings (A criteria) history and it has earned an impressive 96 Earnings Per Share rating, well above the 80+ minimum rating for buy candidates. Among concerns, we previously noted that the number of top-rated funds owning an interest has been reported lower. Now its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 0.9 is an unbiased indication that its shares have been under slight distributional pressure over the past 50 days.

Y - Relative Strength rating has improved to 83, above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Finding support at its 50 DMA line, but deterioration below that important short-term average would raise more concerns and trigger a technical sell signal. A breakout above the pivot point with at least +40% above average volume is needed to trigger a new technical buy signal.
