Volume Rose On Both Exchanges While Indices Closed Mixed

The major averages ended mixed as speculation spread that the international aid package will not be enough to help Greece avoid defaulting on its debt. Volume, an important indicator of institutional sponsorship, rose compared to Tuesday's totals. Advancers led decliners narrowly on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs still easily trumped new lows on both exchanges. There were 54 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, higher than the 37 issues that appeared on the prior session. A healthy crop of new leaders making new highs bodes well for any market rally, but that number abruptly contracted amid the latest bout of distribution.

Apple Inc (AAPL +5.98%), Morgan Stanley (MS +4.04%), McDonald's Corp (MCD +0.03%), and Boeing Co (BA +3.85%) all traded higher after releasing solid quarterly results. Meanwhile, shares of Yahoo Inc. (YHOO -5.06%), Cree Inc. (CREE -7.24%), Wells Fargo & Company (WFC -2.02%), and AT&T (T -1.20%) all traded lower after releasing their results. So far, over 106 companies in the benchmark S&P 500 have reported their Q1 results with approximately 88% of them beating estimates. This has been one of the strongest quarters in years which bodes well for the economic recovery. In addition, only 10 companies have missed estimates with two meeting estimates. Remember, that it is very important to not only focus on the companies results but how they react to the their numbers as we continue to make our way through the heart of earnings season.

The IMF, EU and Greece began talks to activate the 45 billion-euro ($61 billion) emergency aid package. The fiscal crisis is considered to be a “wake-up call” on sovereign-debt risks around the globe. For most of this year, investors have been concerned with the possibility of a Greek default but so far it has yet to occur.

Influential Gains From Financial and Retail Groups Today

Financial shares continued bouncing back and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.01%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.88%) posted gains. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.36%) also edged higher.  Meanwhile, the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.08%) lost ground and the Internet Index ($IIX -0.33%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.27%) edged lower on a mostly negative session for the tech sector.  The Healthcare Index ($HMO -1.82%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.48%) were among Wednesday's worst laggards. Energy shares also pulled back and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.87%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.82%) both surrendered part of the prior session's big gains.

Leader Extended From Base After Wedging Higher

Salesforce.com, Inc. (CRM +$0.60 or +0.71% to $85.08) has rallied +17.7% higher since its appearance in the FSU section on 3/05/10 with an annotated weekly graph under the headline "Perched Near Historic Highs Awaiting New Buy Signal. Today's gain on below average volume helped it hit a new all-time high, extended from prior chart highs and well above its "max buy" level.  Disciplined investors require definitive proof of heavy volume institutional buying demand before taking action on sound buy candidates, and they do not chase stocks that are too extended from a sound base.

It is fair to say that CRM technically "wedged" to new highs from a cup-with-high-handle type pattern. Volume totals were below the investment system guidelines as it rallied above its latest pivot point. A proper technical buy signal requires a minimum of +50% above average volume.  The market's biggest winners usually had volume spike up many times the stock's average trading total as a breakout to new highs signaled the beginning of a substantial rally much higher in price.

New (or add-on) buying efforts might be considered appropriate under the investment system guidelines when at some future point this high-ranked Computer Software - Enterprise firm eventually forms a new sound base. It has traded up +80.56% since featured in a Stock Bulletin on 8/16/09 under the headline "Forces Have Been Favorable For Software Services Firm."  Light volume pullbacks near prior chart highs or its 10-week average could provide patient investors a chance to accumulate shares at an advantageous level near chart support.  The increase in institutional (I criteria) ownership has been encouraging in the past, however the number of top-rated funds owning its shares fell from 325 in Dec '09 to 305 in Mar '10.
