Major Averages Put Up Mixed Performance for Day and Week

The major averages finished the week with a mixed session on Friday. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose +1.3%, and the S&P 500 Index added +0.6%, but the Nasdaq Composite Index fell -0.4%. Friday's volume totals were reported mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lower on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by almost a 2-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 3-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 46 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 49 stocks. The session concluded with gains for 20 of the 34 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

The US equities markets avoided further technical damage. A report showed German business sentiment unexpectedly improved in April. Pundits cited recent speculation the G-20 will announce new funding for the IMF’s European reserves. Better-than-expected earnings results also were a mostly positive force. Europe ended Friday's session in positive territory. The FTSE rose +0.5% in London. The DAX added +1.2% in Germany. The 10-year Treasury note was up 1/16 of a point to yield 1.96%.

Microsoft Corp's (MSFT +4.55%) first quarter profits beat consensus projections. General Electric Co (GE +1.15%) also rose following its positive earnings release. Tech and financials were the session's laggards. Apple Inc (AAPL -2.46%) fell, putting the shares down about -10% from its April 10 intra-day high of $644.00. Bank of America Corp (BAC -4.68%) sank after an analyst downgraded the shares.

The major averages' (M criteria) rally came under pressure and some analysts quickly called it market "correction", however a somewhat healthy crop of high-ranked stocks has still provided a fair dose of market leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs). Any additional technical deterioration in the major averages' charts below their 50-day moving average lines and latest lows would raise greater concerns. That would prompt investors to reduce exposure to stocks and raise cash, rather than having a continued bias toward making new buys. On a case-by-case basis, eliminating any stocks showing signs of fundamental or technical weakness is precisely how the fact-based system helps investors raise cash and avoid setbacks during any market downturn.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. The recent low defines important near-term support to watch. Technically, chart readers may notice that its recent action at the high resembles a "double top" pattern which has bearish connotations following the breakdown below its 50 DMA line and prior low. Deterioration below the latest low (12,710) would violate the neckline of a head-and-shoulders pattern, which can bode especially poorly for the market outlook.

The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.69%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.69%) again had a positive bias on Friday while most other groups lost ground. Medical-related groups were identified as standouts on the prior session (read here). The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -2.38%) led the tech sector lower while the Internet Index ($IIX -0.43%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.32%) finished with smaller losses. Financial shares also edged lower and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.94%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.56%) were a drag on the major averages. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.16%) quietly edged lower, and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.35%) also ended with a small loss while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.02%) finished flat.

Formed a New Ascending Base But Did Not Confirm New Buy Signal

Ubiquiti Networks Inc (UBNT -$1.15 or -3.45% to $32.14) has been consolidating from an all-time high hit last week. Its color code recently was changed to yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 3/26/12 high plus 10 cents after forming an advanced "ascending base" pattern marked by 3 pullbacks of 10-20% (highlighted in yellow on the annotated graph below) following its previous breakout. A volume-driven gain did not yet trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. If subsequent gains are produced, disciplined investors know that the further one chases any stock above its pivot point the greater the chances are than an ordinary pullback may necessitate selling. A tactical approach called pyramiding is taught in the Certification to help investors avoid chasing stocks and get the best results. Disciplined investors also know to always limit losses if ever any stock falls more than 7% from their purchase price!

Bullish action has continued since it was last shown in this FSU section on 3/21/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Volume-Driven Gain For Best Ever Close", as it rallied for a best-ever close and challenged its 52-week high with a solid gain backed by +58% above average volume. It was first featured in yellow at $22.25 in the 1/27/12 mid-day report (read here) when perched within close striking distance of its 52-week high which was the basis for the pivot point cited. Subsequently, a technical buy signal was triggered on 1/30/12 with a considerable volume-driven gain into new high territory. It also reported earnings +145% on +95% sales revenues for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 versus the year ago period, adding to its strong fundamental track record of solid quarterly reports.

The limited trading history of new issues is often a cause for concern, yet in this case the stock built a sound base pattern of sufficient length and its fundamental characteristics were noted as particularly strong. Strong fundamentals and bullish technical action are no guarantee a stock will go on to generate great profits for investors.
