Major Indices Pulled Back Following Big Gains on Prior Session

On Tuesday the major averages took a breather after Monday's broad market rally. The volume totals were mixed, lighter on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by 3-2 on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both major exchanges. There were 105 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 140 stocks. The session concluded with gains for 10 of the 34 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Mixed economic data caused room for hesitation. Consumer confidence was slightly higher this month after reaching a one-year high in February. The Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index showed activity rose at a more modest pace in March than in the previous month. House prices fell at a slower pace last year as the S&P/Case-Shiller index declined 3.8%. In turn, homebuilders got a boost as Lennar Corp (LEN +4.66%) and others posted gains.

Among sectors, energy stocks led the laggards as oil inventories rose to a six-month high, causing crude to fall from a three-day high. Meanwhile, gold and copper declined from two-week highs as the U.S. dollar rebounded.

The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend has been underpinned by widespread leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) as they have continued the prior rally. Disciplined investors may have a bias toward accumulating stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based system. As always, avoid chasing stocks extended too far from sound base patterns and be sure to limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from your purchase price.

Commodity-Linked Groups and Financials Led Pullback

Commodity-linked groups were laggards as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.40%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.19%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.40%) lost ground. A pullback in the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.36%) and Bank Index ($BKX -1.31%) also weighed negatively on the major averages. The Networking Index ($NWX +0.46%) posted a small gain, but the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.57%) and Internet Index ($IIX -0.42%) ended with modest losses and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.06%) finished flat. The Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.07%) and Retail Index ($RLX -0.00%) also hugged the flat line at the close of Tuesday's session.

Winning Streak Leaves Leader Extended Above "Max Buy" Level

Netease.com Inc (NTES -$0.50 or -0.83% to $59.42) pulled back today on higher volume after a streak of 4 consecutive volume-driven gains into new high territory. It was featured in yellow at $56.18 in the 3/19/12 mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point based on its 4/19/11 high plus 10 cents. Now it is extended from its prior base, and its old highs in the $55 area define initial support to watch on pullbacks. On its weekly chart, last week's gain capped a 5-week winning streak with above average volume as it rallied well above its 2011 high which was the basis for the pivot point recently cited.

Long ago, its last appearance in this FSU section was on 10/09/09 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Weakness Prompts Removal From Featured Stocks List After 80% Gain In 6 Months", when clear signs of distributional pressure were noted. Based on weak technical action it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list then, and it went on to fall from around $36 to $26 over the next 6 months before eventually rebounding back to new highs in 2011.

Fundamentally, its past 6 quarterly comparisons through Dec '11 showed strong sales revenues and earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline, easily satisfying the C criteria. It has also maintained a good annual earnings (A criteria). One concern is the waning number of top-rated funds owning its shares, which fell from 274 in Mar '11 to 240 in Dec '11, not a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria. However, its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.3 suggests that its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.

Disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks that have rallied more than +5% above their pivot point, and the always limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from their buy point.
