Indices Ended Little Changed With European Woes Lingering
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The major averages erased earlier gains as euro zone concerns resurfaced, ending Tuesday's session mixed and little changed. The volume totals were reported slightly higher versus the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 54 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session's total of 45 stocks. There were gains for 5 of the 16 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.
The Cypriot Parliament rejected the bailout plan that would impose a levy on bank deposits, and unconfirmed reports said the nation's Finance Minister submitted his resignation. Europe's financial woes overshadowed encouraging U.S. economic data. Housing starts gained +0.8% in February to an annual rate of 917,000, while building permits advanced to the best level since June 2008.
Eight of the 10 sectors on the S&P ended lower, led by declines in the energy space including Transocean Ltd (RIG -1.97%) as crude oil fell -1.6% to $92.20 per barrel. On the earnings front, shoe retailer DSW Inc (DSW -6.19%) after falling short of analysts' estimates in the fourth-quarter. In other news, Lululemon Athletica Inc (LULU -2.76%) fell on news that it was pulling merchandise from its stores due to lack of quality.
Turning to fixed income markets, Treasuries were higher along the curve with the benchmark 10-year note up 7/16 to yield 1.91%.
New buying efforts are justified under the fact-based system since a follow-through day on 3/05/13 shifted the market's (M criteria) direction to a confirmed rally again after a brief correction. Any sustainable rally requires a healthy crop of companies hitting new 52-week highs, so it is always essential to see meaningful leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is enduring mild distributional pressure while consolidating above prior highs.

Energy-Related Shares Led Broad Retreat
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.01%) was a standout decliner and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.77%) also lost ground while energy-related shares faced pressure. The tech sector saw unanimous losses for the Networking Index ($NWX -0.89%), Internet Index ($IIX -0.72%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.54%), and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.39%). The Retail Index ($RLX -0.88%) and financial shares also created a drag on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.71%) and the Bank Index ($BKX -0.25%) ended lower. Defensive shares were little changed as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.03%) and the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.07%) finished flat.

Weakening Fundamental and Technical Characteristics a Concern
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Comcast Corp Cl A (CMCSA -$0.24 or -0.59% to $40.13) is testing support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line while enduring mild distributional pressure. A damaging violation would trigger a technical sell signal. Fundamental concerns remain since it reported earnings +11% on +6% sales revenues for the Dec '12 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its Relative Strength Rating has also slumped to 75 (see red circle) below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Prior highs in the $38 area help define chart support to watch below its 50 DMA line. Since it was last shown in this FSU section on 2/19/13 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Following Sub Par Earnings Bullish Action Has Continued", the subsequent gains it has posted lacked great volume conviction, and the losses it has tallied have been marked by above average volume in more than a few instances.
The high-ranked Telecom Services - Cable/Satellite firm's annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong and leadership from other firms in the industry group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,916 in Jun '11 to 2,274 in Dec '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its huge supply of 2.097 billion shares in the float could make it less likely to be a great sprinter, meanwhile, the S criteria calls for investors to usually look at small-cap or mid-cap companies.

G - Tallying a volume-driven gain today. Halted its slide following a gap down on 3/14/13 after pricing a Secondary Offering while retreating on heavy volume after a spurt of volume-driven gains into new 52-week high territory. Previously noted - "Very extended from its prior base, but having rallied more than +20% in the first 2-3 weeks after its breakout, the investment system rules suggest holding such winners for a minimum of 8 weeks." >>> The latest Featured Stock Update with an annotated graph appeared on 2/26/2013. G - Hit another new high with today's gain backed by more than 2 times average volume. Color code is changed to green after getting extended from the secondary buy point noted earlier.
