Major Averages' Rise Backed By Very Light Volume

On Monday the major averages posted small gains. The volume totals were reported much lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus Friday's totals that were boosted by options expirations. Breadth was positive as advancing issues led declining issues by more than 3-2 on the NYSE and by nearly a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 78 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, versus the prior session total of 76 stocks. The session concluded with gains for 17 of the 31 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Fresh economic data included the March NAHB housing market index falling to 28, missing expectations for a 1 point increase to 30. European markets closed off of their lowest levels. The FTSE in London was higher by +0.1%, while the German DAX fell -0.1%. In commodities, crude oil advanced +0.9% to $108.01 per barrel, while gold gained +0.4% to $1,662.50 an ounce.

On the M&A front, Abovenet Inc (ABVT +12.78%) rose after the company agreed to be acquired by Zayo Group for $84 per share. Apple Inc (AAPL +2.1%) helped lift the tech sector as shares of the iPod maker were in the green following the company's announced $10 billion share repurchase program and $2.65 quarterly dividend. On the earnings front, shares of Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE +2.04%) climbed ahead of their scheduled earnings report after the close. American Express CO (AXP +1.3%) rose while strength continued in the influential financial groups which are reliable "leading indicators" regular readers have seen repeatedly noted in this commentary.

In other news, U.S. Steel Corp (X +6.35%) rallied after the stock received an analyst upgrade and target price increase. Also in the sector, AK Steel Holding Corp (AKS +4.76%) and Nucor Corp (NUE +1.29%) rose.

The major averages' (M criteria) have been underpinned by widespread leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) as they have continued the prior rally. Disciplined investors may have a bias toward accumulating stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based system. As always, avoid chasing stocks extended too far from sound base patterns and be sure to limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from your purchase price.

Tech and Financial Groups Led Gainers
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam

Gains in the financial groups have helped underpin the major indices' ongoing advance, and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.06%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.46%) were on the rise again on Monday. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.68%) rose modestly, as did the Retail Index ($RLX +0.29%). The Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.39%) also tallied a small gain while it was outpaced by bigger gains from other tech sector indices including the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.75%), Internet Index ($IIX +1.02%), and the Networking Index ($NWX +1.37%). Commodity-related groups were laggards as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.29%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.20%) edged lower, yet the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.52%) posted a small gain.

Allot Communications Ltd (ALLT -$0.14 or -0.67% to $20.68) is holding its ground near its 52-week high, extended from its prior base. Disciplined investors do not chase extended stocks, and they always limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from their purchase price. A considerable gain on more than 7 times average volume helped ALLT rise from an orderly 13-week base and trigger a technical buy signal as it was featured in the 3/13/12 mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 2/23/12 high plus 10 cents.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 63 in Mar '11 to 107 in Dec '11, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It completed a new Public Offering on 11/09/11. Quarterly comparisons have shown strong sales revenues and earnings increases satisfying the C criteria. This Israeli Computer - Networking firm showed good annual earnings increases in FY '10 & '11 after losses in prior years. No overhead supply remains to act as resistance.
