Major Averages Post Gains With Lighter Volume

The major averages finished with unanimous gains on Monday, however the volume totals were lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign that institutional investors were not aggressively accumulating stocks. Advancers easily led decliners on the NYSE by 3-1 and by 5-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 89 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 22 stocks. There were gains for 23 of the 28 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page, a list that has recently expanded while the market's leadership improved.

Stocks were higher today after Greece's parliament passed an austerity package over the weekend. Approval of the measures put the troubled nation a step closer to receiving 130 billion euros in bailout funds.

Financials and industrials led the market's advance. Shares of Bank of America Corp (BAC +2.23%) rose Caterpillar Inc (CAT +1.74%) contributed the most to the Dow's gain. Energy also saw some green with Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK +2.39%) gaining after the company said it is planning up to $12 billion in asset sales and joint ventures in 2012. Tech stocks gained ground with Apple Inc (AAPL +1.86%) finishing above $500 for the first time.

European markets finished in positive territory. The FTSE gained +0.8% in London while the DAX added +0.5% in Germany. Greece's Athex index climbed +4.7% on the session.

The latest expansion in leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has maintained and improved the current confirmed market uptrend. As this commentary has repeated, the M criteria requires a healthy crop of strong leaders for any sustained market advance. While the market has recently produced a larger crop of stocks hitting new highs, it always remains important for investors to be selective in choosing high-ranked buy candidates while being disciplined and following sound rules for buying and selling.

Medical, Financial, and Tech Groups Gained Ground

The Healthcare Index ($HMO +2.10%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +2.54%) were Monday's leading gainers. The Retail Index ($RLX +1.06%) was a positive influence on the major averages along with strength in the financials as the Bank Index ($BKX +0.83%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.88%) posted gains. Other tech areas has a slightly positive bias as the Internet Index ($IIX +0.50%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.63%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.38%) each posted a modest gain. Commodity-linked groups were mixed with the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.44%) finishing with a small loss while the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.42%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.86%) both rose.

Awaiting Confirming Gains With Volume as Reassurance

Often, when a leading stock is setting up to breakout of a solid base it is highlighted in CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report. The most relevant factors are noted in the report which allows prudent CANSLIM oriented investors to place the issue in their watch list. After doing any necessary backup research, the investor is prepared to act if and when the stock triggers a technical buy signal (breaks above its pivot point on more than +50% average turnover). In the event the stock fails to trigger a technical buy signal and its price declines then it will simply be removed from the watch list. In other cases, stocks may be featured in CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report.after recent action already triggered technical buy signal. Disciplined investors know to buy as near as possible to the pivot point and avoid chasing stocks after they have rallied more than +5% above their pivot point. It is crucial to always limit losses whenever any stock heads the wrong direction, and disciplined investors sell if a struggling stock ever falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

Roadrunner Transportation Systems Inc (RRTS -$0.07 or -0.40% to $17.33) is holding its ground perched at its 52-week high with no resistance remaining following a considerable gap up gain on 2/09/12 with heavy volume. It was featured in yellow with a pivot point cited based on its 10/28/11 high plus 10 cents when highlighted in the 2/10/12 mid-day report (read here) while it was noted - "Subsequent confirming gains with volume would be a welcome reassurance since it has encountered some resistance and technically finished the prior session just below the pivot point cited. Reported earnings +92% on +44% sales revenues for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 versus the year ago period, continuing its streak of strong quarters satisfying the C criteria."

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 97 in Mar '11 to 142 in Dec '11, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The Transportation - Logistics group currently has a low Relative Strength Rating, which is a bit of a concern with respect to the L criteria, however there is at least one other strong leader in the group, Echo Global Logistics Inc (ECHO), showing recent strength. Confirming volume-driven gains into new high ground from it and other leaders in the group would be a welcome reassurance to disciplined investors.
