Major Averages' Initial Gains Faded

After initial enthusiasm over a tax compromise faded the major averages ended mixed and little changed on Tuesday's session. Volume totals were reported higher than the prior session's totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Advancers and decliners were evenly mixed on the NYSE. Advancers held a 5-4 lead on the Nasdaq. A total of 121 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from a total of 154 issues on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Of the 29 high-ranked leaders currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page the biggest gainer was Steven Madden Limited (SHOO +4.76%), meanwhile Camelot Info Systems Ads (CIS -8.56%) slumped badly along with many other China-based companies.

Citigroup Inc (C +3.6%) rose in heavy trading after the government sold the rest of its stake in the bank. Some investors seemed inclined to take profits after the S&P 500 Index rose to its highest level in two years. The Dow was up 88 points in the first hour, but closed down 3 points. Reports late in the session about insider trading probes on Wall Street also took a toll after the market at first welcomed a compromise to extend Bush-era tax cuts and unemployment benefits. The deal must still be passed by Congress, and some Democrats said they do not like the compromise.

Bond prices slumped on concerns of a rising budget deficit. A 3-year government note sale drew the lowest demand since February. The 10-year Treasury note was down more than one point to yield 3.12%. The US dollar climbed against the euro while the Irish parliament neared a vote on an austerity plan. Gold tumbled after hitting another record high, and the price of oil also closed lower after a short-lived rally.

Weakness Worst In Defensive Groups

Defensive groups were among the weakest laggards on Tuesday as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.56%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.72%) lost ground. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.37%) fell, yet the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.47%) posted a modest gain. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.19%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.06%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.01%), and Internet Index ($IIX +0.11%) ended a quiet session for the tech sector barely changed. Influential groups including the Retail Index ($RLX -0.14%), Bank Index ($BKX -0.08%), and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.13%) also finished the session very close to where they had started.

Heavy Distributional Losses Cause Damage

Longtop Financl Tech Ads (LFT -$1.80 or -4.66% to $36.80) violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line on the prior session, raising concerns. It was down considerably today amid widespread weakness in many China-based companies, and its large loss raised more serious concerns and triggered a more worrisome technical sell signal. Its damaging distributional loss led to a test of support at its 200 DMA line and an intra-day violation of a recent chart low ($37.71 on 11/15/10) before rebounding to close back above that prior low. A subsequent rebound above its 50 DMA line would help its outlook, meanwhile it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list again as of tonight. Its Relative Strength rank has slumped to a mediocre 53, below the 80+ guideline for new buy candidates under the investment system.

After LFT was featured in yellow in the 10/18/10 mid-day report (read here) following a 10-month long flat base it had briefly undercut its 50 DMA line and then spiked above the pivot point cited to new all-time highs. Earnings results in the latest quarterly report also stand out now as having slumped under the +25% guideline, raising fundamental concerns.
