Volume Cools As Major Averages End Mixed

On Monday decliners outnumbered advancers by a 7-to-6 ratio on the NYSE while advancers outnumbered decliners by a similar ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. Volume totals were reported lighter than Friday's totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. There were 24 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up slightly from the total of 18 issues on the prior session. Leadership has waned significantly since November 4th, when were 188 stocks appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, and new highs totals were about 4 to 9 times higher on the Nasdaq and NYSE, respectively.

An afternoon slide led the major stock averages to a mixed close after some new mergers and economic news. Merger announcements included Caterpillar Inc (CAT +0.8%) buying Bucyrus International (BUCY +29%), and EMC Corp (EMC -1.2%) acquiring Isilon Systems (ISLN +28.4%) for $2.2 billion. Commodities fell as a jump in the US dollar and lower Treasuries offset gains. October retail sales jumped to the highest level in seven months. Consumer spending almost doubled analyst forecasts thanks to higher demand for automobiles. Ford Motor (F +4.3%) hit an eight-year high in action that indicates investor enthusiasm while its American competitor, what may be called "General Motors II", approaches an IPO shortly following the auto-maker's historic bankruptcy.

Of the high-ranked stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page, Aruba Networks Inc (ARUN -4.97%) slumped worst and closed near the session low with a considerable loss with slightly above average volume indicative of distributional pressure. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines important near-term support to watch. Earnings news is due on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 for its latest quarter ended October 31, 2010.

With all of the media attention given to the world's debt concerns, keep in mind that the debt being talked about represents increasing goodwill and efforts to sustain the recovery effort following a global crisis. Keep your focus on the action in the major averages and high-ranked leaders to know that your investment portfolio is in proper step with the market direction (M criteria). If high-ranked leaders begin breaking down in the weeks ahead, there needs to be a healthy crop of high-ranked leaders showing up and replacing them in order for the rally to be sustainable

Financial and Biotech Indexes Posted Small Gains

Financial shares ended Monday's session with modest gains as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.63%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.66%) helped the major averages offset weakness in other influential areas. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.51%) backpedaled, and weakness in energy-related areas dragged the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.59%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.31%) lower. The Retail Index ($RLX -1.04%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -1.02%) fell, and most tech groups dragged on the major averages as the Internet Index ($IIX -1.35%), Networking Index ($NWX -1.04%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.79%) drifted lower and only the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.88%) bucked the market's mostly negative bias to produce a modest gain.

F5 Networks Inc. (FFIV -$4.31 or -3.48% to $119.55) has been hovering near all-time highs. Prior highs in the $112 area define initial chart support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It is now a bit extended from any sound base after recent volume-driven gains, and disciplined investors would avoid chasing it, while it still could go on to produce more climactic gains.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 899 in Dec '09 to 948 as of Sept '10, a reassuring sign with respect to the I criteria. The company currently sports a very healthy Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating of 99 and a Relative Strength (RS) rating of 98. It resides in the Internet- Networking Solutions group which is an Industry Group showing lots of leadership, satisfying the "L" criteria. Its quarterly sales and earnings results showed impressive growth satisfying the C criteria. The company has maintained a good annual earnings (A criteria) history. This stock was first featured in the January 2004 edition of CANSLIM.net News (read here) with a $26.85 pivot point. During the past 6 years, FFIV has built several bases, and it has also been through some tough consolidation periods.
