Indices Posted Gains With Positive Breadth and Better Volume

The major indices held onto gains to finish firmly higher on Tuesday. The volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session's totals, hinting at slightly better buying demand returning from the institutional crowd. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and by nearly a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of new 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 53 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 19 stocks. There were gains for 18 of the 21 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

The major averages advanced for a second day following positive reports on the economy and corporate earnings. The market opened higher after a report showed industrial production rose 0.4% in September, ahead of the consensus estimate for a 0.2% increase.

Better-than-expected earnings helped Johnson & Johnson (JNJ +1.38%) rise, however The Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS -1.03%) lost ground even after reporting better than expected earnings. The Coca-Cola Company (KO -0.60%) was down after reporting revenues below projections. Shares of Citigroup Inc (C +1.61%) rose even after the bank unexpectedly announced its CEO is stepping down. Materials were the best performing sector as The Dow Chemical Company (DOW +5.61%) rallied. Energy stocks also led the market higher with Chevron Corp (CVX +1.13%) and Exxon Mobile Corp (XOM +0.95%) posting gains, and Murphy Oil Corp (MUR +8.03%) was a standout gainer after the company announced plans to spin-off its U.S refined fuel business.

Tuesday's solid gain helped the Nasdaq Composite Index rebound above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500 Index each made a stand above their respective 50 DMA lines during the latest pullback.

In market corrections the M criteria argues against new buying efforts. However, leadership has improved in the market since last week with an increase in the total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs. Investors should continue watching individual holdings very carefully through the current earnings season and be prepared to take quick action. Commodity-Linked Groups, Broker/Dealer, and Tech Indexes Rose

Energy-related shares had a positive bias as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.71%) and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.90%) rallied. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +2.01%) also posted a solid gain, meanwhile the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.39%) edged lower. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.54%) helped boost the major averages as it tallied a modest gain, and the tech sector saw solid gains from the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +2.18%), Networking Index ($NWX +1.90%), and the Internet Index ($IIX +1.04%). Financial shares were mixed as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.26%) posted a solid gain while the Bank Index ($BKX -0.46%) suffered a modest loss.

No Technical Breakout Occurred After Latest Pivot Point Cited

G P Strategies Corp (GPX +$0.05 or +0.26% to $19.56) recently has been consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Volume driven gains above the latest pivot point have not triggered a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Meanwhile, subsequent losses exceeding the recent low ($18.82 on 10/04/12) would raise more serious concerns and trigger technical sell signals.

Its last appearance in this FSU section was on 9/13/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Consolidating in Tight Range Near 52-Week High". It went on to form a base of sufficient length before the new pivot point was noted. It reported earnings +41% on +19% sales revenues for the Jun '12 quarter. When the stock was highlighted in yellow in the 6/29/12 mid-day report (read here) it was noted - "It cleared a valid base earlier this week with volume-driven gains and no overhead supply remains. Quarterly earnings increases above the +25% guideline in the 8 latest quarterly comparisons through Dec '11 satisfy the C criteria. Recent cluster of Insider buying in May-Jun looks similar to that which was reported in Nov, Dec, and Jan as it rose toward and above prior resistance in the $14 area."

A downturn in FY '09 earnings was previously noted as a flaw concerning the A criteria, and its mediocre Group Relative Strength Rating was another concern noted with respect to the L criteria. Investors' odd are usually most favorable when choosing a stock with robust leadership in the same industry group. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 158 in Mar '12 to 165 in Sep '12, a slightly reassuring trend concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 hints that its shares have been under accumulation during the past 50 days. Company management reportedly owns 25% of its shares, which keeps the directors keenly focused on building and maintaining shareholder value. Its small supply (S criteria) of 14.2 million shares in the public float is a favorable characteristic that was found in most of the market's greatest winners, however that can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. Disciplined investors always limit losses if any stock falls more than -7% from their purchase price.
