Major Averages Pull Back With Lighter Volume Totals

Stocks ended lower on Monday as investors digested Friday's large move. Volume totals were reported lower on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to the prior session which signaled large institutions were not aggressively selling stocks. Decliners led advancers by a 3-to-2 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 68 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower than the 74 issues that appeared on the prior session, and down from triple digits on Monday.

Stocks were confined to a relatively tight trading session as the US dollar edged higher and gold prices inched lower from record levels. Before Monday's open, several multi-billion dollar deals were announced: Southwest Airlines (LUV +8.71%) announced plans to purchase AirTran Holdings Inc. (AAI +61.32%) for about $1.4 billion, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.(WMT -1.11%) proposed to buy South African consumer goods distributor Massmart Holdings Ltd. for about $4.25 billion, and Unilever NV announced plans to acquire beauty products manufacturer Alberto Culver Co. (ACV +19.57%) for $3.7 billion.

Barring some unforeseen decline, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is on track for its strongest September since 1939! The major averages have rallied in each of the past four weeks, which is the longest winning streak since a streak of eight consecutive weekly gains ended in late April (which corresponds with the highest levels of the year).

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been strong. Looking forward, the window is open for disciplined investors to carefully buy high-ranked stocks, while many pundits are expecting that markets may consolidate following recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) this week. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index has rallied from below its 50-day and 200-day moving average (DMA) lines and above its summer highs. It may be on course to challenge the recovery high it reached in April.

Financial Shares Continue Lagging

Financial shares were among Monday's laggards as the Bank Index ($BKX -1.87%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.86%) slumped. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.60%) lost ground and tech shares were mixed as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.27%) and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.68%) fell while the Internet Index ($IIX +0.23%) and Networking Index ($NWX +0.42%) posted small gains. Commodity-linked areas drifted lower as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.79%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.27%), and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.16%) ended with small losses, and the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.17%) also ended slightly lower.

Healthier Base Pattern Has Developed

In recent weeks an increasing number of leading stocks setting up and breaking of solid bases have been highlighted in the CANSLIM.net Mid-Day Breakouts Report. Letter-by-letter details concerning strengths or shortcomings of the company in respect to key fundamental criteria of the investment system appear along with annotated datagraphs highlighting technical chart patterns in the Featured Stock Update (FSU) section included in the CANSLIM.net After Market Update each day.

H M S Holdings Corp (HMSY +$0.08 or +0.14% to $58.26) was featured in the mid-day report today in yellow with a pivot point cited based on its 52-week high plus ten cents. Healthy action has continued since last noted in the mid-day report on 7/30/10 - "Patient investors may watch for an ideal new base pattern to form. This high-ranked Commercial Services - Healthcare firm has maintained a solid sales revenues and earnings growth history that still satisfies the C and A criteria, and it has rebounded impressively since it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 8/10/09."

Technically, its gain today had sufficient volume, but it failed to trigger a proper technical buy signal because it did not produce a meaningful gain above its prior high or pivot point. Confirming gains would be worth watching for, and disciplined investors know to resist the urge to get in "early" without the compelling proof of heavy institutional (I criteria) buying demand driving a stock into new high territory.
