Major Averages Erased Early Gains

The major averages erased early gains to finish lower on Tuesday. The volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals inflated by options expirations. Decliners led advancers by about a 3-1 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of new 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 58 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 47 stocks. There were gains for only 4 of the 22 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Before the open, a report showed U.S. home prices increased +1.2% in July from a year ago. In a separate report, consumer confidence rose in September to its highest level in seven months. The afternoon retreat by the major averages was attributed to Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser who said the central bank's new bond buying program is unlikely to boost growth or employment.

Caterpillar Inc (CAT -4.25%) contributed the most to the blue chip index's decline, falling after lowering its 2015 forecast. Materials were the worst performing sector with iron ore producer Cliffs Natural Resources Inc (CLF -4.44%) down. Tech stocks also weighed on the market. Google Inc (GOOG -0.03%) hit a new record high at $762.04, but erased its early gain and finished the session with a small loss. Software maker Red Hat (RHT -4.28%) fell after reporting a profit shortfall Monday night. Apple Inc (AAPL -2.50%) also declined..

The 10-year note was up 3/8 of a point to yield 1.67%.

The M criteria is still favorable as the major indices have maintained their previously confirmed rally with a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

Widespread Losses Pressured All Groups

Financial shares were a negative influence on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -2.71%) and the Bank Index ($BKX -1.67%) lost ground, and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.73%) ended with a smaller loss. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -2.47%), Networking Index ($NWX -1.85%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.42%), and Internet Index ($IIX -1.22%) finished with unanimous losses. Commodity linked groups also were a drag on the market as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.67%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.51%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.97%) fell.

Extended From Prior Base Following Volume-Driven Gains

Cardinal Financial Corp (CFNL -$0.15 or -0.99% to $14.43) is perched at its 52-week high today. After its spurt of volume-driven gains it is extended from its prior base. Prior highs and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line define support to watch on pullbacks near the $13 level. It was last shown in this FSU section on 8/21/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "High-Ranked Bank's Shares Quietly Challenge New Pivot Point ". Subsequent volume-driven gains above its pivot point confirmed a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.

The high-ranked leader hailing from the Banks - Southeast industry group reported earnings +70% on +39% sales revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2012 versus the year ago period. Sequentially, its recent quarterly comparisons show encouraging sales revenues acceleration. It has earned high ranks and matches favorably with the C and A criteria. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 172 in Sep '11 to 183 in Jun '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.1 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 29.2 millions shares outstanding is a favorable characteristic, yet it can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional accumulation or distributional pressure.
