Indices Consolidate As Leadership Wanes

The major averages ended lower Wednesday after a lousy report from the housing market was released and several large cap technology stocks got smacked. Volume totals were reported lower on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange compared to the prior session. Decliners led advancers by about a 3-to-2 ratio on the NYSE and a 2-to-1 ratio the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 41 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower than the 81 issues that appeared on the prior session, and down from triple digits on Monday.

Overnight, gold surged to a fresh record high as the US Dollar continued its two week decline. At 10:00AM EST, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) released its House Price Index (HPI) which showed home prices continued to fall. The HPI mainly covers single-family homes using data provided by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The report fell -0.5% in July after falling a revised -1.2% in June. The decline was largely due to the now-expired tax credit.

Tech giants, Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE -19.03%) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT -2.15%) gapped down on heavy volume which dragged other stocks lower. Adobe shed a whopping -19% and fell to a fresh 52-week low, which was its largest single day decline in eight years. The stock got smacked after reporting weaker-than-expected quarterly results. Meanwhile, Microsoft fell after its dividend increase was lower than some analysts expected.

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been strong. Looking forward, the window is open for disciplined investors to carefully buy high-ranked stocks, while many pundits are expecting that markets may consolidate following recent gains. It was very encouraging to see the major averages and several leading stocks break above stubborn resistance levels and continue marching higher. All the major averages had recently rallied above their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines, a clear sign that the overall market is in healthier shape. Now that the summer highs have been exceeded, the next important resistance levels for the major averages are their respective April highs.

PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small Cap Index stalled short of its summer highs while the major averages recently rallied beyond their respective summer highs. This seems to suggest that uncertainty about the future economy is adversely impacting the outlook for small businesses more than bigger businesses.

Strength In Gold & Silver Index Is Not A Bad Sign

The Bank Index ($BKX -1.84%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.70%) slumped and were a negative influence on the major averages on Wednesday. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.44%) led the tech sector lower while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.83%), Internet Index ($IIX -0.59%), and the Networking Index ($NWX -0.35%) finished with smaller losses. The energy group had a negative bias as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.81%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.40%) ended modestly lower, and the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.31%) group edged lower. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.28%) fought for a small gain and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.18%) was a standout gainer.

PICTURED: The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.18%) was a standout gainer, rising near multi-year highs. Technically, gains in gold-related areas are not considered to be a negative sign at all for stocks. If the market's current rally is sustained through the end of the year and beyond, it is entirely possible, even likely, that gold-related areas can participate along with many other conventional "growth" groups. The Featured Stocks list currently includes several stocks from the Metals/Mining group, along with high-ranked leaders in the Internet, Retail, Computer Software, Medical, Drugs, and Health Services groups. Acceleration In Recent Quarters Is A Good Sign

In recent weeks an increasing number of leading stocks setting up and breaking of solid bases have been highlighted in the CANSLIM.net Mid-Day Breakouts Report. The most relevant factors are briefly noted in the report which allows disciplined investors to place the issue in their custom watch list and receive subsequent notes directly via email immediately when they are published (click the "Alert me of new notes" link). More detailed analysis is published soon after a stock's initial appearance in yellow once any new candidates are added to the Featured Stocks list. Letter-by-letter details concerning strengths or shortcomings of the company in respect to key fundamental criteria of the investment system appear along with annotated datagraphs highlighting technical chart patterns in the Featured Stock Update (FSU) section included in the CANSLIM.net After Market Update each day.

Syniverse Holdings Inc (SVR +$0.31 or +1.36% to $23.09) spiked up to a new 52-week high earlier today and was featured in yellow in the mid-day report (read here). It has formed a saucer-like base in the past 9 weeks that included a couple of weeks trading under its 50-day moving average (DMA) line (the red line). It found support near prior chart highs following the previously noted 7/13/10 breakaway gap to a new multi-year high. No overhead supply remains to act as resistance. Recent quarterly comparisons show encouraging sales revenues and earnings acceleration versus the year-ago periods. While it has maintained a strong growth rate, its up and down annual earnings history (A criteria) remains a concern (see red ovals) .

Disciplined investors may watch for convincing gains into new high ground with heavy volume to confirm a technical buy signal before accumulating shares at prices up to +5% above its prior highs. Remember to proceed with caution, meaning only buying a small position in the strongest names that are breaking out on heavy volume. Then, if and only if, the stock advances 2-3% take another small position. Repeat this process one more time to round out your entire position. For example, if one wanted to buy $10,000 of stock; $5,000 would be the first buy, then if the stock rallies +2% the next buy would be $3,000, and the final $2,000 worth would be accumulated if the stock advances yet another +2%. This strategy is known as "pyramiding" and is extremely useful when used properly, as it allows the market action to help dictate how heavily you invest.
