Major Indices End Mixed And Little Changed

Stocks ended mixed after August's retail sales topped estimates and gold surged to a fresh all-time high. Tuesday's volume totals were reported slightly lower on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Monday's levels. Decliners led advancers by a small margin on the NYSE and by nearly a 3-to-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 69 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower than the 77 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Stocks in Europe were under pressure before Tuesday's open after a report showed economic growth in the Euro zone was slowing. In the US, retail sales topped estimates and rose by the largest pace in five months. The Commerce Department said total retail sales swelled by +0.4% following a revised +0.3% rise in July. This was the second consecutive monthly gain and bodes well for the economic recovery.

Tuesday's action was considered normal after Monday's large gain. Overall, the action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) remains healthy. Looking forward, the window is now open for disciplined investors to begin carefully buying high-ranked stocks again. It was encouraging to see a flurry of high-ranked leaders trigger fresh technical buy signals and break out of sound bases in recent sessions. All the major averages rallied above their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines this week, which is another encouraging sign. The next important resistance level the major averages are facing is their respective summer highs.

Gold & Silver Index Rallies to New 2010 High

Retail Index ($RLX +1.21%) posted a solid gain but the financial group was a negative influence on Tuesday as the Bank Index ($BKX -1.35%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.82%) fell. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.71%) led the tech sector higher and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.74%) posted a small gain as the Internet Index ($IIX +0.11%) edged higher. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.55%) suffered a small loss as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.18%) edged higher. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.13%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.10%) ended with small losses.

Gap Up Gain With Nearly Twice Average Volume

Newmont Mining Corporation's (NEM +$2.43 or +4.02% to $62.85) gapped up today, rallying with nearly twice its average volume for a considerable gain. It traded above its pivot point and hit a new 52-week high, yet closed below its pivot point near the middle of its intra-day trading range. No overhead supply remains to hinder its progress. Confirming gains with above average volume would be a reassuring sign in the days ahead. The C and A criteria are satisfied as the company has demonstrated solid quarterly sales revenues and earnings increases (above the +25% minimum guideline) in recent comparisons and it has a good annual earnings history.

Buyable breakouts require that the stock rise above its pivot point with considerable gains and those gains must be backed by a minimum of at least +40%-50% above average volume, ideally much more. Pyramiding into a position may be the most prudent way to let the market action dictate investors' entries. As always, it is of the utmost importance to sell a stock if it drops 7-8% below your purchase price.

Leadership in the Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems group (L criteria) is encouraging, and there are other high-ranked leaders from the group currently listed on the Featured Stocks page. Many other gold mining interests are headquartered overseas which increases their potential pitfalls due to geopolitical shifts.
