S&P 500 Index Hits 4 Year High But Closes Lower

The benchmark S&P 500 Index briefly hit a four-year high but the major averages reversed Tuesday's early gains to finish unanimously in the red. The volume totals were higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Decliners led advancing issues by an 8-7 margin on NYSE and by a 7-5 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of new 52-week highs led new 52-week lows on the NYSE on the Nasdaq exchange, and the new lows total on the NYSE was in the single digits again. There were 63 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 60 stocks. There were gains for only 6 of the 19 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Investors focused on additional corporate earnings results. Best Buy Co Inc (BBY -1.38%) fell after the retailer posted a drop in same-store sales and cut its earnings outlook. On the upside, Urban Outfitters Inc (URBN +18.22%) advanced by the most since 2003 after its second-quarter profit bested street expectations. After the closing bell Dell Inc (DELL -1.75%) traded lower while it warned of a weak second half.

In fixed-income, the 10-year note was up 1/32 to yield 1.8%. Attention now turns to Wednesday's update on the housing market as well as the release of the Fed's FOMC minutes.

In terms of the M criteria, the major indices recently have been in a confirmed rally coupled with an expansion in leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

The Bank Index ($BKX +0.19%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.28%) posted small gains and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.05%) finished flat. The Networking Index ($NWX +0.36%) posted a small gain while the Internet Index ($IIX -0.66%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.33%) edged lower and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.00%) finished flat. The Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.39%) and energy-related shares also sputtered as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.38%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.29%) closed the session with small losses.

High-Ranked Bank's Shares Quietly Challenge New Pivot Point

Cardinal Financial Corp (CFNL +$0.01 or +0.08% to $13.05) has tallied 5 consecutive gains with below average volume, and it challenged its pivot point today. No resistance remains due to overhead supply. A new pivot point was recently cited based on its 7/19/12 high after a short yet orderly base pattern. Subsequent volume-driven gains above its pivot point may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. It was last shown in this FSU section on 7/26/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Posted Volume-Driven Gain Following Strong Earnings." The high-ranked leader hailing from the Banks - Southeast industry group encountered some distributional pressure after first featured in the 7/20/12 mid-day report (read here). It found support near its prior highs and near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line last week, a reassuring sign.

It reported earnings +70% on +39% sales revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2012 versus the year ago period. Sequentially, its recent quarterly comparisons show encouraging sales revenues acceleration. It has earned high ranks and matches favorably with the C and A criteria. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 172 in Sep '11 to 185 in Jun '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.0 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 29.2 millions shares outstanding is a favorable characteristic, yet it can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional accumulation or distributional pressure.
