Major Averages Encountered Distributional Pressure

For the week, the Dow rose +0.7%, the S&P 500 gained +1.2% and the NASDAQ increased +2.2%. The major indexes finished mixed on Friday. The Dow fell 51 points to 16,662. The S&P 500 was down less point to close at 1,955. The NASDAQ gained up 12 points to 4,464.  The Dow added 61 points to 16,713. The S&P 500 rose 8 points to 1,955. The NASDAQ was 18 points higher at 4,453. Volume totals were higher on both major exchanges. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a narrow margin on the NYSE and 4-3 on the NASDAQ exchange. There were 41 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 34 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 10 of the high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page. The market (M criteria) deterioration recently earned the label of a "correction" as the technical damage became significant to chart readers and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) waned.  Disciplined investors limit losses and reduce market exposure during rough market periods by selling any stocks which fall more than -7% from their purchase price.

PICTURED: The Dow encountered distributional pressure.

The major averages ended a choppy session mostly lower amid renewed concerns over Ukraine. Initial gains on hopes easing tension were erased after reports the Ukrainian military destroyed a portion of a Russian armored column that crossed the border. Today's economic data was mixed. Before the open, reports showed producer prices rose at a slower pace in July while industrial production increased +0.4%. Additional releases revealed manufacturing activity in the New York region declined and consumer sentiment slipped in August.
On the earnings, front, Applied Materials (AMAT +6.3%) after results that beat estimates. Nordstrom (JWN -5.2%) fell as the department store's store sales missed forecasts. Monster Beverage (MNST +30.5%) was up the most in the S&P 500, surging after Coca-Cola said it was taking a 17% stake in the company. Coca-Cola (KO +1.7%) rose. At the sector level, energy was the best performing group while financials fell the most on the session. Kinder Morgan (KMI +3.9%) rose. Life insurer Lincoln National closed ( -1.3%) lower.
Treasuries advance amid the renewed tension in Ukraine. The 10-year note rose 17/32 to yield 2.34%.

Y - Hit another new 52-week high with today's volume-driven gain. Volume should be at least +40% above average behind gains above a stock's pivot point during a market rally (M criteria) to trigger a proper technical buy signal. Prior session's gain on +89% above average volume approached and briefly exceeded its pivot point but it did not close above that threshold. Its 50 DMA line defines important near-term support.
