Stocks finished higher on Tuesday. The Dow was up 24 points to 17829. The S&P 500 gained 5 points to 2088 and the Nasdaq Composite added 6 points to 4843. The volume totals were lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE but decliners led advancers 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 24 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 37 on the prior session. New 52-highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE but new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
With gains on Monday the S&P 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average both managed to claw above their 50 DMA lines, respectively. The market's confirmed uptrend (M criteria) endured pressure, however, leadership recently improved and new stocks were listed on the Featured Stocks Page as noteworthy buy candidates. The major averages advanced for a second day as investors digested comments from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. Yellen reiterated a cautious approach to interest-rate policies citing the possibility of uneven U.S. economic growth amid global uncertainty. Oversees, European shares finished higher amid easing “Brexit” concerns ahead of the U.K. referendum on June 23. The broad Euro STOXX 600 climbed 0.7%, to cap off its biggest three-day advance in 11 months. Six of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory. Energy and Telecom paced the gains while Materials declined. United Continental (UAL +3.36%) rose as the airline announced it expects $3.1 billion a year in operating income by 2018. Adobe Systems (ADBE +1.77%) rose ahead of its scheduled release after the closing bell. CarMax (KMX -4.92%) fell as comparable same store sales narrowly missed estimates. Werner Enterprises (WERN -9.60%) with news the transportation company released a negative pre-announcement. Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 4/32 to yield 1.70%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude fell 1.1% to $48.85/barrel. COMEX gold lost 1.8% to $1267.10/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar gained against the yen and euro.
