Major Averages Ended Lower With Higher Volume
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The major averages edged lower on Tuesday's session. The volume was reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign of distributional selling pressure from the institutional crowd. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 57 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the total of 64 stocks on the prior session. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 5 of the 10 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page. The S&P 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average both recently surged into new high territory coupled with an expansion in leadership (new 52-week highs) that helped signal that the market direction (M criteria) is in a "confirmed uptrend". Any new buying efforts should be selective and focused in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating -3.1% off its 2014 high.
The major averages finished modestly lower attributed to investors heading to the sidelines before Wednesday's European Central Bank policy meeting and Friday's U.S. employment report. Stocks declined despite a report that showed factory orders grew +0.7% in April versus a projected +0.5% increase. A separate release revealed vehicle sales rose to a 16.7 million annual rate in May.
On the earnings front, Dollar General (DG +3.89%) after the discount retailer reiterated its full-year guidance. In M&A news, Hillshire Brands (HSH +9.48%) following Pilgrim Pride's (PPC -2.24%) increased offer to buy the company.
Sector performance in the S&P 500 was skewed to the negative on the session. Telecom was the worst performing group with Verizon (VZ -1.5%) retreating. Energy was the best performing group as Exxon Mobil (XOM +0.4%) contributed the most to the sector's advance.
Treasuries declined for the fourth straight session. The benchmark 10-year note fell 19/32 to yield 2.59%.

Finding Support Above 50-Day Moving Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Grifols Sa Ads (GRFS +$1.03 or +2.51% to $41.99) has been finding support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line after enduring distributional pressure. This Spanish firm from the Medical- Ethical Drugs industry needs subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs to trigger a technical buy signal. Little resistance remains due to overhead supply. It was last shown in this FSU section on 5/15/14 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Perched Within Close Striking Distance of New Highs", after highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/11/14 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here).
It reported earnings +34% on +25% sales revenues for the Mar '14 quarter, marking its 4th consecutive quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has also been strong. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 186 in Sep '13 to 192 in Mar '14, a reassuring sign of institutional buying demand (I criteria).

Y - Relative Strength rating has slumped to 78, below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates, raising concerns. Finding support at its 50 DMA line, but deterioration below that important short-term average would raise more concerns and trigger a technical sell signal. A breakout above the pivot point with at least +40% above average volume is needed to trigger a new technical buy signal. Reported earnings +56% on +54% sales revenues for the Mar '14 quarter, and prior quarters were also well above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). See the latest FSU analysis for more details and annotated graphs.
