Major Averages Posted Gains With Less Volume Conviction
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
On Monday the NASDAQ advanced 11 points to 5,016. The Dow climbed 46 points to 18,070. The volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE, a sign of lackluster buying demand from the institutional crowd. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly a 3-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Leadership improved as there were 29 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 17 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages recently endured distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) waned, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 gained 6 points to 2,114, challenging its all-time high.
The major averages pushed higher as investors focused on economic data and earnings ahead of this week's labor market updates. Factory orders in March topped projections, indicating the manufacturing sector may be thawing from the harsh winter.
Eight of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were higher. Financials were up the most. Positive commentary from Barron's pushed Blackstone (BX +1.94%). Exelon (EXC +2.02%) and other utilities caught a tailwind from benign regulatory activity . In earnings, Comcast (CMCSA +0.63%) and Cognizant (CTSH +6.14%) rallied after strong profit tallies by both. However, negative guidance sent Diamond Offshore (DO -1.11%) down. Following a widely-publicized restructuring plan, McDonald's (MCD -1.71%) fell. Pioneer Natural Resource (PXD -1.88%) felt the pain of activism as it fell on negative commentary.
Treasuries fell ahead of the labor market data. The benchmark 10-year note declined 8/32 to yield 2.14%. The 30-year bond lost more than a full point to yield 2.87%.
Commodities were mixed. WTI crude extended losses by 0.3% to $58.96/barrel, but COMEX gold gained 1.1% to $1187.90/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar advanced 0.1% with the euro off 0.4% to $1.1150/EUR and the yen little changed at ¥120.14/USD.

Found Prompt Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Skyworks Solutions Inc (SWKS +$0.82 or +0.83% to $99.11) found prompt support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, building on a riskier "late-stage" base pattern. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/23/15 high plus 10 cents in the 5/01/15 mid-day report (read here). Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point are needed to trigger a technical buy signal.
It reported earnings +85% on +58% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, continuing its streak of quarterly comparisons with earnings well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. Its Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds rose from 714 in Jun '14 to 992 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The Electronics - Semiconductor Manufacturing group has a Group Relative Strength Rating of 95, a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria.

G - Posted a gain today on light volume. Reported earnings +5% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), a fundamental flaw making it a less favorable buy candidate. Churned heavy volume last week while retreating from its 52-week high. Prior reports cautioned - "It did not produce gains above the pivot point backed by at least the +40% above average volume necessary to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch."
