Dow Only -10% From All-Time High as Major Averages Continue Rallying

Another final-hour push sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average and benchmark S&P 500 Index both to their best levels since June 2008. Volume totals were reported near but slightly lower than the prior session totals on both major stock exchanges. Advancing issues beat decliners by 3-2 on the NYSE and 5-4 on the Nasdaq. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 82 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the total of 108 on the prior session. Companies on the Featured Stocks Page diverged from the broader market again, however, as there were only gains from 8 of the 21 high-ranked market leaders currently listed. New set-ups with strong characteristics and fresh breakouts from high-ranked leaders have been scarce in recent weeks, even while the major averages have rallied.

Two economic reports disappointed, but stocks rallied in the face of the bad news, a characteristic of a strong bullish market environment. First quarter gross domestic product rose less than expected and initial jobless claims increased in the latest week to the highest level in three months. The dollar remains weak, sending gold to another record.

Corporate earnings and mergers overshadowed weak economic data. Insurance stocks and railroads led the advance following stronger-than expected results. The Allstate Corp (ALL +5.7%) beat earnings estimates and rallied despite concerns about tornado exposure. Norfolk Southern Corp (NSC +8%) surged on good earnings news and guidance. Akamai Technologies Inc (AKAM -14.74%) limited gains on the Nasdaq, tumbling after the company said traffic growth has slowed. Constellation Energy Group (CEG +5.7%) rallied after Exelon Corp (EXC +1.66%) agreed to buy the power producer for $7.9 billion. Keep in mind that earnings reports will continue to be a factor, and volume and volatility are often greater near earnings announcements.

On Wednesday the Nasdaq Composite Index topped its October 2007 high. Regular readers of this commentary may recall earlier this year as we observed the S&P Mid-Cap 400 Index and S&P Small-Cap 600 Index each hitting new all-time highs. Meanwhile, the benchmark S&P 500 Index is perched -13.7% off its all-time high.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained in six of the last seven sessions. It finished Thursday's session -10% off its October 2007 all-time high.

Bank Index Still Below 50-Day Average After 5 Straight Gains

The Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.90%) was a standout gainer on Thursday. Modest gains from the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.38%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.49%) helped influence the major averages in a positive way. Tech sector weakness limited the Nasdaq Composite Index's gain as the Networking Index ($NWX -0.85%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.69%), and Internet Index ($IIX -0.41%) ended unanimously lower with small losses. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.16%) and Retail Index ($RLX -0.05%) also inched lower. Energy-related shares were mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.34%) fell and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.13%) rose slightly. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.73%) was among the day's laggards.

PICTURED: The Bank Index ($BKX +0.49%) was up for a 5th consecutive session, rising after a slump near its 200-day moving average (DMA) line, rallying toward its 50 DMA line which acted as resistance in early-April.

Considerable Rally For Salon Services Firm

Ulta Salon Cosmetics & Fragrance, Inc. (ULTA -$0.10 or -0.19% to $52.81) is holding its ground stubbornly near its all-time high with volume totals cooling. It has been noted as extended from any sound base. On pullbacks, its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines chart support to watch well above prior highs. Since its last appearance in this FSU section on 3/29/11 with analysis and an annotated graph under the headline, "Extended From Sound Base, Up +113% In Just Over One Year", it tacked on additional gains. Since first featured in yellow in the 3/12/10 mid-day report at $22.81 and (read here) and in a more detailed Stock Bulletin later that afternoon under the headline "Strong Earnings Increases Help Leader Meet Key Criteria", in just over 13 months it has traded up as much as +136.7%.
