Negative Bias As Earnings Season Begins

Investors were calm and the major averages quietly held their stance at the beginning of earnings season The S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq Composite Index were both down slightly while the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished one point higher. Declining issues beat advancers by 9-4 on the NYSE and by 2-1 on the Nasdaq. Monday's volume totals were reported mixed, slightly lower on the NYSE, yet higher than the prior session on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs totals still significantly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. There were 24 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, half the total of 48 on the prior session. On the Featured Stocks Page there were gains from 10 of the 21 high-ranked market leaders currently listed.

Energy and mining stocks were among the weakest performers. Crude oil fell more than $2 a barrel from a 30-month high and gold dropped from a record level after the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecast for the U.S. and Japan.

Merger news failed to provide a lift for the broader market. Endo Pharmaceuticals (ENDP +0.3%) agreed to buy American Medical Systems (AMMD +32%) for $2.9 billion. Level 3 Communications Inc (LVLT +18.06%) rose after announcing the purchase of Global Crossing Ltc (GLBC +68.72) for $1.9 billion. Tenet Healthcare Corp (THC -14.7%) filed a lawsuit against takeover suitor Community Health Systems, Inc. (CYH -35.76%), alleging Medicare fraud. Automakers, including Ford Motor Co (F -3.07%), went into reverse following a report that 2011 sales in China may grow slower than expected.

After Monday's close, Alcoa Inc (AA -0.84%) traded lower after its profit topped estimates but revenues disappointed. A flood of earnings announcements in the coming weeks may provide a catalyst for increased volatility.

Commodity-Linked Groups Led Decliners

Commodity-linked areas led decliners on Monday as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.73%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.86%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.83%) fell. The tech sector had a mildly negative bias as the Networking Index ($NWX -1.21%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.84%), and Internet Index ($IIX -0.51%) lost ground. Financial shares also edged lower as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.20%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.10%) finished the session slightly in the red. Meanwhile, the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.20%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.41%) posted small gains and the Retail Index ($RLX +0.13%) inched higher.

Latest Breakout Negated By Damaging Losses

Ezcorp Inc (EZPW -$0.40 or -1.36% to $28.94) was down today with above average volume, and it closed near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. A considerable loss on 4/08/11 with three times average volume raised concerns while it negated its latest breakout and slumped below its prior high closes in the $29-30 area previously noted as important support to watch. A prompt sign of support near its 50 DMA line would be an encouraging sign, meanwhile any additional damaging losses may trigger more worrisome technical sell signals.

Earnings have remained above the +25% guideline in its quarterly comparisons versus the year ago period, satisfying the C criteria. It also has a strong annual earnings history (A criteria). The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 369 in Mar '10 to 415 in Dec '10, an encouraging sign with respect to the I criteria. Since its last appearance in this FSU section on 3/10/11 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Deterioration In Stock And Broader Market Hurting Outlook", it found support above an earlier chart low ($25.56 on 1/25/11), then subsequent gains with heavy volume triggered a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.
