Major Indices Ended Higher for Best First Quarter Since 1998

For the first quarter of 2012, the major indices finished with their best start to a year since 1998. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained +8.14% in the quarter, the S&P 500 Index increased +12%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index had an impressive advance of +18.67%. On Friday's session the major averages finished mixed. The volume totals were reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost 3-2 on the NYSE, but decliners led advancers by a narrow margin on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs swelled and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both major exchanges. There were 47 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 10 stocks. The session concluded with losses for 14 of the 32 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Among earnings results, Research In Motion (RIMM +7.06%) was higher after reporting their fourth-quarter earnings. Stocks were buoyed by positive economic readings. February personal income rose +0.2%, falling short of consensus projections for a +0.4% increase, while consumer spending improved +0.8%, topping expectations of a +0.6% advance. Consumer sentiment increased to its highest level in more than a year and consumer spending rose more than expected in February, by the largest margin since June of 2011. Europe also helped the cause after the region's finance ministers agreed to raise the euro-area bailout fund.

Among sectors, health care continued its recent rally amid the ongoing Supreme Court hearings, while the tech sector lagged behind. Energy and materials stocks also gained ground as commodities rebounded. Crude oil was higher, settling at $103.04 per barrel after President Obama said current oil prices were sufficient enough to enact sanctions on Iran. Gold and copper added to the broad gains as investors sought alternative assets to the declining U.S. dollar.

The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend has still been underpinned by healthy leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs). Disciplined investors may stay with a bias toward accumulating stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based system. As always, avoid chasing stocks extended too far from sound base patterns and be sure to limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from your purchase price.

Healthcare Group Remains in Rally Mode

The Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.67%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.72%) posted gains on Friday. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.41%) also posted a modest gain, meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX +0.03%) and Internet Index ($IIX -0.12%) lagged the other tech areas. Financial shares has a slightly positive tilt as the Bank Index ($BKX +0.32%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.35%) edged higher, adding a positive influence on the major average, meanwhile the Retail Index ($RLX -0.01%) was unchanged. Commodity-linked groups traded up as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.94%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.50%), and Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.70%) rounded out session market by positive action from most industry groups.

Enduring Distribution While Consolidating Above 50-Day Average

Transdigm Group Inc (TDG +$0.86 or +0.75% to $115.82) was up today on light volume after enduring mild distributional pressure this week. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines important chart support to watch, and a violation of that important short-term average would trigger a technical sell signal. Distributional action in recent weeks is a cause for concern, yet it finished the week -4.6% off its 52-week high and it has very little overhead supply remaining to act as resistance. It remains below its latest pivot point cited. The number of top-rated funds owning its share rose from 364 in Mar '11 to 425 in Dec '11, a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria. A volume-driven gain above its latest pivot point for a new high close would trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.

The Aerospace/Defense group's Relative Strength Rating fell from B+ to a C- (see red circle) since its last appearance in this FSU section on 2/10/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Earnings Increases Showing Acceleration Bodes Well". It had just seen a spurt of volume-driven gains into new high territory, and since then it has been consolidating in an orderly fashion. It reported earnings +65% on +51% sales revenues for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 versus the year ago period. That marked another increase in a streak of accelerating earnings comparisons above the +25% minimum guideline for earnings growth (solidly satisfying the C criteria). Its strong annual earnings history also satisfies the A criteria. In recent years it had rebounded and rallied to new highs following a deep consolidation after it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list 1/17/08.
