S&P 500 Index Marks New Closing High; Benchmark Index Up +10.0% in First Quarter
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks were higher on Thursday, the final trading day of March. In the month of March, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained +3.7 %, the S&P 500 Index climbed +3.6% and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose +3.4%. For the first-quarter of 2013, the Dow advanced +11.3%, the S&P 500 was +10.0% higher and the Nasdaq Composite Index advanced +8.2%. Thursday's volume totals were reported higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicating a hint of institutional accumulation ahead of the long holiday weekend. Breadth was positive as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 3-2 on the NYSE and by 9-7 the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of stocks hitting new 52-week highs expanded and new highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 103 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up considerably from the prior session total of 61 stocks. There were gains for 11 of the 19 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.
The Dow climbed 52 points to a new record high at 14,578 as a positive tone followed the re-opening of banks in Cyprus. Concerns surrounding Europe eased. On the economic front in the U.S., fourth-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was revised to a 0.4% annualized rate from the prior reading of 0.1%. Weekly initial jobless claims increased 16,000 to 357,000.
Nine of 10 sectors were higher on Thursday, led by utilities including Spectra Energy Corp (SE +1.72%). Biogen Idec (BIIB +5.44%) climbed after the company won FDA approval for its multiple sclerosis medication. Technology was the laggard with Apple Inc (AAPL -2.1%) slumping. On the earnings front, GameStop Corp (GME +5.75%) rallied after quarterly results topped consensus estimates. Blackberry (BBRY -0.84%) edged lower despite posting an earnings beat.
Treasuries were lower with the 10-year note down 1/32 to yield 1.85%.
New buying efforts are justified under the fact-based system since a follow-through day on 3/05/13 shifted the market's (M criteria) direction to a confirmed rally again after a brief correction. Any sustainable rally requires a healthy crop of companies hitting new 52-week highs, so it is always essential to see meaningful leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

PICTURED: The benchmark S&P 500 Index managed its best ever close while approaching the 1,576 all-time high (on an intra-day basis) from October 2007.

Tech Sector Led Market Higher
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The tech sector had a positive bias as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.27%) led the way, followed by the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.72%) and smaller gains from the Networking Index ($NWX +0.45%) and the Internet Index ($IIX +0.28%). Meanwhile, the Bank Index ($BKX -0.05%), Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.03%), and Retail Index ($RLX +0.04%) hugged the flat line on Thursday, limiting the major averages' ability to rally. The Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.05%) also finished flat while the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.62%) backpedaled. Energy-related shares edged lower as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.23%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.07%) each finished the session just below unchanged.

Gains Lacked Volume While Wedging From Advanced "3-Weeks Tight" Pattern
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Celgene Corp (CELG +$2.67 or +2.36% to $115.91) quietly traded above its new pivot point with Thursday's gain backed by only average volume. It recently formed an advanced "3-weeks tight" base and its color code was changed to yellow with new pivot point of $115.54 cited based on its 3/14/13 high plus 10 cents. Disciplined investors know that volume-driven gains above the pivot point are necessary to trigger a proper technical buy signal, and the minimum volume required behind a gain is +40% above average. The volume requirement is important because the market's best winners really had the look of institutional accumulation, the kind of heavy buying demand that can lead to a sustained and meaningful advance in share prices.
Bullish action has continued since its last appearance in this FSU section on 2/28/13 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Extending Gains After Holding Firm Ground". The Medical -Biomed/Biotech firm has rewarded patient investors since they were reminded on 1/17/13 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Rule Suggests Letting Explosive Winners Have Time For Greater Gains", as it was noted - "Having quickly rallied more than +20% in the first 2-3 weeks after its technical breakout, the investment system rules suggest holding such explosive winners for a minimum of 8 weeks to allow for potentially greater gains. Disciplined investors never hold any stock if it fails badly however, or if it falls more than -7% from their purchase price."
CELG has maintained a strong earnings history (C and A criteria), and it recently reported earnings +26% on +13% sales revenues for the Dec '12 quarter. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,623 in Dec '11 to 1,742 in Dec '12, a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria. However, the company is already well-known by the institutional crowd. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines important support to watch on pullbacks. It has not tested that short-term averages since finding support there in late December before embarking on a considerable winning streak.

Y - Volume was above average today after a "negative reversal" as it hit a new 52-week high and then finished lower on the session. The action was indicative of distributional pressure, rather than institutional accumulation. MRLN wedged higher with gains lacking great volume conviction since last noted on 3/25/13 with caution - "Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point could help clinch a more convincing technical buy signal." >>> The latest Featured Stock Update with an annotated graph appeared on 3/15/2013. G - Finding support above its 50 DMA line with encouragingly higher and above average volume behind today's gain. Completed a Secondary Offering on 3/14/13. Any violation of its 50 DMA line or recent low ($21.24 on 3/15/13) would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals. >>> The latest Featured Stock Update with an annotated graph appeared on 3/22/2013. G - Hovering near its all-time high today, holding its ground with volume totals cooling in the past week. It is very extended from the secondary buy point noted earlier. The 50 DMA line and recent low ($64.05 on 2/21/13) define important support areas to watch on pullbacks. >>> The latest Featured Stock Update with an annotated graph appeared on 3/12/2013.
