Leadership Remained Healthy While Major Averages Ended Mixed
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Thursday. The Dow lost 117 points to 17,959. The NASDAQ gained 9 points to 4,992. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Decliners led advancers by nearly a 2-1 margin on the NYSE while advancers actually led decliners by a narrow margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were 93 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 105 stocks. The list of new 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has been supported by a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. Wednesday's expansion in leadership was an encouraging sign for the market outlook. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index remains perched near its all-time highs. It declined 10 points to 2,089.
The major averages consolidated following Wednesday's rally off of Janet Yellen's comments. Economic data showed last week's jobless claims rose less than projected to 291,000, but the fourth-quarter trade deficit unexpectedly widened to $113.5 billion. In the Philly Fed region, a measure of business optimism disappointed analysts, and a gauge of leading economic indicators increased +0.2% in February, in line with estimates.
At the close, nine of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were lower. Materials and energy fell the most with a rise in the dollar. DuPont (DD -2%) and Freeport McMoRan (FCX -5.3%). In energy, Exxon Mobil (XOM -1.9%) and Chevron (CVX -1.8%) were lower. In earnings, Williams-Sonoma (WSM +1.9%) after posting disappointing quarterly results. Health care was the lone sector higher. AbbVie (ABBV +2.2%) rallied after acquiring new treatment licenses.
Treasuries gave back some of the prior session's gains. The 10-year note fell 15/32 to yield 1.97%.
Commodities finished mixed. WTI crude declined -2.1% to $43.71/brl. but gold advanced +1.7% to $1,171.00/oz. In FOREX, the dollar gained 1.3% with the euro down 2% to $1.0643/EUR and the yen off 0.7% to ¥120.91/USD.

Biotech and Semiconductor Indexes Rose; Energy-Related Groups Fell
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Energy-related shares slumped as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.62%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.59%) were standout decliners. The Bank Index ($BKX -1.20%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.51%) both lost ground, adding a negative influence on the major averages. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.74%) led the tech sector while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.24%) posted as smaller gain. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.52%) edged lower and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.15%) also finished with a small loss on the session.

Stalled Following "Breakaway Gap" 6 Weeks Ago
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Linkedin Corp (LNKD +$0.43 or +0.17% to $260.58) is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and prior highs. It stalled and has made no progress since the considerable "breakaway gap" noted in the 2/06/15 mid-day report (read here). It hit new 52-week and all-time highs (N criteria) clearing all resistance due to overhead supply, triggering a technical buy signal.
LNKD was last shown in this FSU section on 2/27/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Holding Ground Following Breakaway Gap". A "breakaway gap" has been noted as the one exception where investors may chase a stock more than +5% above prior highs, however risk increases that an ordinary pullback may trigger the strict sell rules requiring investors to always limit losses.
It reported earnings +56% on +44% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter. That marked its 3rd consecutive quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), following sub par Dec '13 and Mar '14 earnings results. It has maintained a strong annual earnings (A criteria) history.
The high-ranked leader from the Internet - Content group's Return On Equity of 9% is still below the 17% guideline, which is a minor concern. Its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Ownership by top-rated funds has been on the rise from 907 in Jun '14 to 1,100 in Dec '14, an encouraging sign concerning the I criteria.
