Recovery Continues On 1-Year Anniversary of Bear Market Lows

Amid speculation the economy will continue to recover from the worst recession since WWII, the major averages ended slightly higher on the session marking the one year anniversary of the 2009 bear-market low close for the benchmark S&P 500 Index.  Volume, a critical gauge of institutional demand, was reported higher than the prior session on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Advancers led decliners by about a 5-to-4 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 62 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the 76 issues that appeared on the prior session. New 52-week highs again overwhelmingly trumped new lows on both exchanges.

The benchmark S&P 500 is up a very impressive +69% since hitting a 12-year low of 666.79 last March. This has been the largest 12-month rally for the benchmark average since the Great Depression. Despite that impressive feat, the S&P 500 is still down -28% from its October 2007 high of 1,576. It is also important to note that the vast majority of stocks that helped the major averages enjoy strong gains last year were low ranked stocks that bounced from egregiously oversold levels (i.e. Citigroup went from $0.97 to $5.43).

Only recently have we begun to see a large number of high-ranked stocks trigger fresh technical buy signals as they breakout of solid bases which is a very healthy sign. Here is an interesting fact: As of Monday's close, 489 of the 500 stocks in the S&P 500 Index are higher since the March lows. The average gain: +115.6%. In addition, all 30 of the Dow Jones Industrial Average components are up, and a whopping 99 of the 100 stocks in the Nasdaq 100 Index are up.

Internet Index Hits Recovery High With 8th Consecutive Gain

The tech sector's Networking Index ($NWX +0.66%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.51%) traded with a modestly positive bias and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.64%) was also a positive influence, however the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.21%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.07%) edged lower and weakness in Retail Index ($RLX -0.54%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.29%) created an additional offsetting drag on the major averages.  Defensive groups lagged again on Tuesday as the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.84%), Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.59%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.60%) lost ground while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.08%) finished virtually unchanged.

High-Ranked Leader Attracting More Institutional Owners

Sirona Dental Systems (SIRO -$0.22 or -0.59% to $36.99) suffered a small loss on below average volume today leaving it still perched above its pivot point yet below its max buy level. It has not made significant headway since it was featured in yellow in the 2/16/10 mid-day report (read here) as it broke out from a 10-week flat base. The considerable 2/16/10 gain triggered a technical buy signal and an annotated graph was included under the headline "Medical - Systems/Equipment Firm Identified While Breaking Out."

Fundamentally, following 3 negative comparisons, its sales revenues in the Sep and Dec '09 quarters showed a return to growth. Quarterly earnings increases have been very strong along with great annual earnings growth in recent years (good C and A criteria). As it has rallied from January 2009 lows near $10, clearly it has been able to get help from underwriters as this high-ranked Medical - Systems/Equipment firm completed Secondary Offerings on 8/06/09 and 12/11/09, and yet another Public Offering on 2/17/10.  The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 55 in Mar '09 to 79 in Dec '09, which is nice reassurance with respect to the I criteria of the investment system.  Often companies attract new institutional investors with the help of underwriters. Any weakness below its pivot point or its 50-day moving average (DMA) line would raise concerns.
