Major Averages Rebound With Gains Backed By Lighter Volume

The major averages snapped a 3-day losing streak and posted gains on Wednesday's session. However, lighter volume was reported on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE, indicating that buying from the institutional crowd lacked great conviction following the damaging distributional action on the prior session. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by about 3-1 on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both major exchanges. There were 19 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 7 stocks. Wednesday's session concluded with gains from 26 of the 29 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page. The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend has recently come under pressure while leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has waned.

The major averages advanced after the latest ADP report showed U.S. companies added 216,000 workers last month. An increase of investor participation in the bond swap of Greek debt also provided a tailwind. The market extended its advance after a Wall Street Journal report speculated that the Fed may be discussing additional monetary stimulus measures.

The Consumer Discretionary sector scored a +1.0% gain as shares of retailers continued their climb. American Eagle Outfitters Inc (AEO +6.26%) even rallied hard despite a disappointing quarterly report and forecast. Pandora Media Inc (P -23.90%) was a notable decliner as shares of the internet music provider fell plunged on its disappointing first-quarter outlook.

The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend has recently come under pressure while leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has waned. Investors must carefully watch their stocks on a case-by-case basis and look out for weakness leading to worrisome technical sell signals. If additional damaging losses push the major averages into a more serious "correction", one great advantage to this fact-based system is that following sound sell rules will force investors to raise cash while reducing their exposure to stocks.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index's chart shows a few losses on higher volume than the prior sessions in recent weeks. That is a sign the market is encountering distributional pressure, meanwhile the volume behind gains has cooled. Time will only tell if the rally resumes or a more worrisome correction takes hold. Retail, Financial, and Tech Groups Posted Gains

The Retail Index ($RLX +1.34%) posted a gain and financial shares were also a positive influence on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.34%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.89%) tallied solid gains. The tech sector saw unanimous gains as the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.55%), Networking Index ($NWX +1.81%), and Internet Index ($IIX +1.07%) posted better than +1% gains, but the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.21%) lagged. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.10%) also was a laggard. Meanwhile the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.81%) rose and gains in energy-related shares boosted the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.57%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.27%).

Technically Strong Even After Latest Sub Par Quarter

Visa Inc (V +$0.80 or +0.70% to $115.64) is consolidating after wedging further into new high territory with below average volume conviction behind its most recent gains. Its prior highs in the $103-104 area define chart support to watch on pullbacks.

Its last appearance in this FSU section was on 1/23/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Leader's Relative Strength Line Not Confirming Latest High." Little more than a week later, while blasting higher on 2/02/12 its color code was changed to yellow with a new pivot point based on its 1/19/12 high plus 10 cents. It followed that up with additional volume-driven gains as there was above average volume behind 3 consecutive weekly gains during a 5-week winning streak into all-time high territory.

Technically it has remained strong, however fundamental concerns were raised by its sub par results for the latest quarter ended December 31, 2011 versus the year ago period, its first comparison below the +25% minimum earnings guideline since Dec '10. Its annual earnings history satisfies the A criteria, but the latest quarter makes it fall short of the C criteria. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,635 in Dec '10 to 2,022 in Dec '11, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria, however it is already well known by the institutional crowd. Leadership shown by at least one other well-known firm in the Finance - Credit Card Payment Processing firm (L criteria) has been a reassuring sign.

Disciplined investors might continue to give it the benefit of the doubt and let it a chance to tally more meaningful gains unless market conditions (the M criteria) further deteriorate prompting investors to raise cash. Watch out for any technical sell signals which might definitively prompt locking in hard fought gains.
