Breadth Turned Negative as Major Averages Fell With Higher Volume

For the week, the Dow lost -1.2%, the S&P 500 fell -1.4% and the NASDAQ declined -0.5%. The major averages fell on Friday, and volume totals for the session were higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, action indicative of distributional pressure. Breadth was solidly negative as decliners led advancers by a 6-1 margin on the NYSE and more than a 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were 25 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 37 stocks. The total number of new 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were losses for all 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, the previously noted uptrend has come under new pressure.  Keep in mind that any sustained rally for the major averages requires a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs.  New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is slumping near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It rallied from its 200 DMA line, however recent gains into new high territory lacked great volume conviction.

On Friday's session  the Dow declined 278 points to 17,856. The S&P 500 lost 29 points to 2,071. The NASDAQ was off 55 points to 4,927.

The major averages retreated as a strong labor market reading spurred speculation of sooner-than-expected rate increases. For February, nonfarm payrolls added 295,000 jobs, versus estimates of 235,000 additions. Similarly, the unemployment rate ticked down to a seven year low of 5.5%. Meanwhile, the trade deficit fell less than expected to $41.8 billion.

All 10 sectors of the S&P 500 were in negative territory. The perceived defensive and income oriented utilities and consumer staples sectors underperformed. Duke Energy (DUK -3.4%)and Altria (MO -3.9%) both fell.  In discretionary stocks, Gap Inc (GPS -1.6%), after February sales failed to impress. However, Bank of America (BAC +1.9%) rose after the company handily passed the Fed stress tests.

Treasuries tumbled lower on rate hike speculation. The 10-year note lost more than a full point to yield 2.24%. The 30-year bond fell over two full points to yield 2.84%.

Commodities were mostly lower. WTI crude lost -2.4% to $49.55/brl while gold also fell -2.6% to $1,165.40/oz. In FOREX, the dollar rallied +1.2% as the euro slid -1.6% to $1.0850/EUR and the yen lost 0.5% to ¥120.70/USD.

Commodity-Linked Groups Lead Broad Declines

The Bank Index ($BKX +0.32%) eked out a modest gain while the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.03%) finished flat on Friday. The Retail Index ($RLX -1.33%) slumped and the tech sector saw unanimous losses from the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.24%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.09%), and the Networking Index ($NWX -0.52%).  A stronger dollar hurt commodity-linked groups as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -6.80%) was a standout decliner. Energy-related shares also slumped as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.39%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -2.01%) both fell.

Consolidating Near 50-Day Moving Average Line But Fundamental Concerns Remain

Amtrust Financial Services' (AFSI -$0.56 or -1.04% to $53.31) is consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with volume totals cooling. Fundamental concerns were raised by earnings for the Dec '14 quarter reported below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight.  AFSI was last shown in this FSU section on 2/11/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Financial Firms Dec '14 Earnings Raised Fundamental Concerns", after highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Members were cautioned - "Disciplined investors might sooner take interest in another fresh buy candidate - one actually breaking out and without any fundamental flaws.  It reported better than expected earnings - but a closer look at the freshly reported Dec '14 quarter shows its earnings rose +18% on +28% sales revenues versus the year ago period.  That broke the prior streak of 9 consecutive comparisons above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), a fundamental flaw difficult to ignore."

The high-ranked Insurance - Property/Casualty/Title firm completed a new Public Offering on 1/08/15.  With the help of underwriters, companies often attract additional institutional buying support with such offerings. The number of top-rated funds owning an interest rose from 349 in Mar '14 to 421 in Dec '14, already a reassuring trend (I criteria).  It has a great annual earnings (A criteria) history and it has a 94 Earnings Per Share rating, well above the 80+ minimum rating for buy candidates. Its Relative Strength Rating is currently 88, above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates.
