Breadth Negative and Leadership Cooled as Major Averages Pulled Back

Stocks finished Tuesday lower. The Dow fell 85 points to 18203. The S&P 500 declined 9 points to 2107. The NASDAQ lost 28 points as it fell beneath the 5,00 level to rest at 4,797. The volume totals for the session were mixed, lower than the prior session total on the NYSE and yet slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were 39 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 76 stocks. The total number of new 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 4 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs.  New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index declined 9 points to 2,107, consolidating near its all-time-high up +2.4% year-to-date.

The major averages took a breather after an uncharacteristically strong February and touching new highs yesterday. Economic data was light today with Wards Vehicle Sales as the headliner. Furthermore, all eyes are on the last half of the week with a triple dip in employment reports, culminating with non-farm payrolls on Friday.

At the close, eight of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were in negative territory. Health care was the worst performing sector. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ -0.9%) led the pack lower in the face of FDA pediatric safety reviews on their products. Consumer discretionary also underperformed. Ford Motor (F -2.4%) fell after February sales declined; however, a smaller than expected gain in the new General Motors Company's (GM +0.5%) monthly auto sales lifted the stock. Energy was a relative outperformer. While heavy-weights like Exxon Mobil (XOM -0.5%) edged lower, smaller companies like EOG Resources (EOG +1.5%) rose.

Treasuries fell on the day as the benchmark 10-year note declined 11/32 to yield 2.12%. The 30-year bond lost 22/32 to yield 2.71%.

Commodities finished mixed. WTI crude gained 1.5% to $50.33/brl, while COMEX gold lost 0.6% to $1201.40/oz.

Extended From Sound Base; Earnings Below +25% Raised Concerns

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (VRX -$0.74% or -0.36% to $202.61) is still stubbornly holding its ground since gapping up on 2/23/15 for a considerable volume-driven gain and new all-time highs on news it will acquire Salix Pharmaceuticals (SLXP). It is very extended from any sound base. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines the closest support to watch.

Following its latest big gap up gain, on 2/24/15 VRX reported earnings for the Dec '14 quarter +20%, below the +25% minimum guideline of the fact-based system (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. VRX was last shown in this FSU section on 2/12/15 with annotated daily and weekly graphs under the headline, "Extended From Prior Highs and Previously Noted Base". Members were reminded - "It is extended from any sound base. It faces no resistance due to overhead supply, however disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks more than +5% above prior highs."

It was highlighted in yellow in the 1/05/15 mid-day report (read here) with an annotated weekly graph showing a new pivot point cited based on the 12/22/14 high while building a cup-with-handle base. Subsequent gains above the pivot point on 1/08/15 were backed by +71% above average volume triggering a new technical buy signal.

A downturn in FY '07 and '08 earnings (A criteria) was followed by a strong earnings rebound in recent years. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,056 in Mar '14 to 1,167 in Dec '14, a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria. The high-ranked Medical - Ethical Drugs firm completed Public Offering on 6/18/13. The upshot of Public Offerings is that when completed the end result is typically an increase in the total number of institutional owners.

Y - Erased today's early gains after matching its 52-week high. A new pivot point was cited based on its 1/13/15 high plus 10 cents. Rallied in response to recent M&A news in the Semiconductor group, and volume-driven gains helped it rebound above the 50 DMA line since its last appearance in the FSU section on 2/18/15 with annotated graphs. Subsequent volume-driven gains above its pivot point may trigger a new technical buy signal.
