Major Averages Fell Friday Yet Ended the Week Higher
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow lost 62 points to 17,824, trimming the +3.8% weekly gain. The S&P 500 declined 7 points to 2,055 to pare its +3.0% weekly move. The NASDAQ finished 20 points lower to 4,744, and +2.4% higher for the week. Behind Friday's losses the volume totals were reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign of distributional pressure. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by more than a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by an 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 74 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 66 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 5 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, additional gains for the major averages have followed Monday's "positive reversal", avoiding more worrisome technical damage that could have signaled the beginning of a serious market "correction".
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index ended lower on Friday after rebounding above its 50-day moving average (DMA) this week. It ended -1.5% off its recent high.
Stocks erased earlier gains on Friday and the major averages reversed course as speculation set in that the positive labor market report may spur earlier-than-anticipated rate hikes. The Labor Department announced the best three months of hiring in 17 years, as 257,000 jobs were added in January and December’s figure was revised 77,000 jobs higher. Meanwhile, consumer credit increased $14.8 billion in December, missing analyst forecasts.
At the close, eight of the 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were lower. Utilities were a relative underperformer, as strong domestic growth and the prospects of rate hikes turned investors negative. Dominion Resources (D -3.8%) fell. However, speculation of a rate hike lifted financial stocks as JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +2%) rose. In M&A activity, Harris Corp (HRS +9.6%) rose after announcing acquisition plans with Exelis (EXEL +36.3%), which surged.
Treasuries moved sharply lower with the benchmark 10-year note down over a full point to yield 1.95%.
Commodities were mixed as WTI extended its rally by 3% to $52.00/barrel. Gold, however, lost 2% to $1,236.60/ounce, as the dollar gained 1%. The euro fell 1.4% to $1.1320/USD and the yen finished 1.2% lower to ¥118.99/USD.

Financial Gains Outweighed by Broader Group Weakness
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Gains from influential financial shares helped the major averages avoid larger losses on Friday as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.65%) and the Bank Index ($BKX +1.81%) both rose. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.49%) outpaced the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.57%) to the downside, meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX -0.12%) finished with a smaller loss. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.21%) also edged lower. Energy-related shares were mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.35%) posted a small gain and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.52%) fell.

PICTURED: The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -5.07%) is consolidating below its 200-day moving average (DMA) line after rebounding above its 50 DMA line.

Breakaway Gap Cleared All Resistance Due to Overhead Supply
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Linkedin Corp (LNKD +$25.43 or +10.69% to $263.40) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/19/14 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It reported earnings +56% on +44% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter. That marked its 3rd consecutive quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), following sub par Dec '13 and Mar '14 earnings results. It has maintained a strong annual earnings (A criteria) history. It hit new 52-week and all-time highs (N criteria) with a considerable "breakaway gap" today, clearing all resistance due to overhead supply and triggering a technical buy signal.
LNKD was dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 5/28/13, and it was last shown in this FSU section on 4/07/14 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Overhead Supply Likely to Hinder Any Subsequent Rally Effort". Following a deep consolidation below its 200-day moving average (DMA) line it gradually rebounded. A "breakaway gap" is the one noted exception where investors may chase a stock more than +5% above prior highs, however risk increases that an ordinary pullback may trigger the strict sell rules requiring disciplined investors to always limit losses.
The high-ranked leader from the Internet - Content group's Return On Equity of 10% is still below the 17% guideline, which is a minor concern. Ownership by top-rated funds has been on the rise from 907 in Jun '14 to 1,095 in Dec '14, an encouraging sign concerning the I criteria.

Y - Encountered distributional pressure and reversed into the red for a volume-driven loss today, closing below its pivot point after hitting a new 52-week high. Highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/26/14 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Triggered a technical buy signal on the prior session. Due to report Dec '14 earnings after the close on Monday, Feb 9th, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Noted in the 11/06/14 mid-day report with caution - "Reported earnings +88% on +24% sales revenues for the Sep '14 quarter, marking its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Patient investors may watch for a new base or secondary buy point to develop and be noted in the weeks ahead."
